Maamla Legal Hai, starring Ravi Kishan, Naila Grewal, and Tanvi Azmi, is currently streaming on Netflix and has been receiving rave reviews from critics and fans all across. The series is basically an authentic court comedy set against the backdrop of Patparganj District Court, drawing inspiration from real-life incidents. The series introduces viewers to the people working under the leadership of Vishwas Pandey, portrayed by Ravi Kishan. Naila played the role of a lawyer who returned from abroad. In an exclusive chat with Zoom, Naila opened up about her role, shooting experience with Ravi, and much more!

Talking about Maamla Legal Hai‘s USP, Naila told Zoom, “The beauty of the series is that we’re bringing a court of comedy. We usually see courtroom drama. What Mamla Legal Hai offers is that we’ve heard stories that are bizarre and quirky, and they’re very much part of our lives. We’re packaging that in a very fun way that you can watch with everyone. It’s informative, it’s funny and lighthearted, and it’s anything you want to watch. This is your quintessential binge-watch-worthy show.”

Recalling her shooting experience, she went on to say, “I laughed a lot during the shoot. I don’t remember laughing so much on a set before this. The entire cast was so funny, and it was like a laughing riot. I was laughing hysterically from one set to the next.”

Spilling deets about her role, Naila said, “I play Ananya Shroff. She’s a third-generation lawyer who has studied at Harvard. She’s a foreigner. Then she comes to India and a district court. She wants to be a legal aid. She wants to help people in need. So, she’s kind of a fish out of water. She’s in a world that is very unfamiliar to her, but she wants to be a part of it. It’s a very busy, chaotic district court, and she wants to be there and help people.”

“This character is not a stereotype. When a girl comes from abroad, she is like having alcaline water or almond milk. She’s so international and foreign in her approach, so how will we make her realistic and believable? It was a little challenging. It was a little difficult to make her a tangible, real human being that is something the audience connects with,” added Naila.

Naila went through thorough preparation for her role. “When I got on board, the first thing I had to do was go and visit a court because I wanted to make my character believable. She can’t make it look like she doesn’t belong in that universe. I started visiting the courts. I’ve been to Bombay High Court and the District Court, and that started laying the foundation for how I’d react if I suddenly became a part of a different environment. That helped me a lot. I picked up the little nuances, and I tried to put that into my character. I did rigorous workshops as well.”

The actress also opened up about her on-screen and off-screen bond with Ravi Kishan. She said, “I had such a different version of Ravi Sir in my head before I started working on this. I thought Sir was going to come up with a fixed idea of how he wanted to play the role. But he came wide-eyed, like a child. When we were reading the script together and we were on set together, he had the same eagerness and childlike view that we all had, and he’s someone who has done more than 700 films. Yet he has that energy, which is unbelievably grasping everything he can. It was a very special learning experience for me. Sir, ke one liners toh bohot famous hai. And popular hai. It was a new experience for me.”
