2023 shooting in Kansas City, Missouri

On April 13, 2023, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, an African American teenager, was shot and critically wounded after ringing the doorbell to the wrong house in Kansas City, Missouri. According to family members, Yarl was attempting to pick up his twin siblings and ended up at the wrong address.[1]

On April 17, 2023, Andrew Daniel Lester, an 84-year old white man, was charged in connection with the shooting. He is charged with armed criminal action and first-degree assault, which is the equivalent of attempted murder in Missouri.[2] The Clay County district attoney stated that there was a “racial component” to the shooting.[3] If convicted, Lester faces between 10 years to life in prison.

Background

Ralph Yarl is a 16-year-old African American teenager. A section leader in marching band, he had earned a Missouri All-State Band honorable mention for playing the bass clarinet, and performed in the metropolitan youth orchestra. He also participated in his school’s Technology Student Association and Science Olympiad team.[4]

Shooting

In the evening hours of April 13, Yarl had been sent to pick up his siblings from an address in the 1100 block of NE 115th Terrace. He accidentally went to a home less than a block away on NE 115th Street and rang the doorbell. Investigators state the suspect shot Yarl twice through the house’s front glass door. The Kansas City Police Department responded to reports of a shooting near the home a little before 10 p.m. Neighbors had found Yarl lying injured in the street and called police, who found Yarl with at least two gunshot wounds to his head and arm.[5]

Suspect

The suspect was identified as 84-year-old Andrew Daniel Lester, a resident born and raised in Virginia and a former America West Airlines technician.[6][7][8]

In the early morning hours of April 14, Lester was taken into custody for attempted assault charges according to jail book records, and was later listed as “out of custody” and “general release” status on the same day.[9]

Aftermath

A weekend rally was held after the shooting where members of the community and family members marched to and demonstrated in front of the suspected shooters home, while calling for official charges to be filed.[5] A GoFundMe was created for Yarl by a family member, which had reached more than $2 million in donations by April 17.[4][10]

Investigation

No initial charges were filed against the homeowner, and he was released after being held in custody for a short time.[5][1] The homeowner was later identified as Andrew Lester, a white man in his mid-80s.[4][3] The Clay…
