Nick Chubb won’t shut things down even without a playoff chance
BEREA − It would’ve been understandable if Nick Chubb’s foot injury was enough for him to take the Browns’ final two games off in order to heal. Both the playoffs and a winning season are off the table.
To do that, however, would run counter to what the Browns’ running back has shown himself to be over his career. That’s why he was quick to shoot down any talk of him resting his ailing foot for the last two games, starting this Sunday at Washington.
“Not at all,” Chubb said Wednesday.
The foot injury occurred late in the Browns’ Dec. 17 win over the Baltimore Ravens. It was enough for Chubb, who famously doesn’t even sit out practices, to miss two practices in the week leading into last Saturday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Chubb was back on the practice field last Thursday, and played the full game against the Saints. Despite the cold and the wind, he rushed for 92 yards on 24 carries, his second consecutive game of at least 92 rushing yards after having been held to 80 yards or less in four of the five games prior to the win over the Ravens.
“Yeah, it was tough for sure,” Chubb said. “I mean, that’s the coldest I’ve ever felt, ever. So I mean, it was great. I thought we still ran the ball pretty well. I thought we could do a little things better here and there, but overall, I mean, I think it was OK for us.”
Chubb is currently the league’s No. 3 rusher with 1,344 yards, and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 12. He’s 195 yards behind the NFL’s leading rusher, the Las Vegas Raiders’ Josh Jacobs, who has 1,539 yards.
While it’s not out of the realm of possibilities for Chubb to chase down Jacobs for the league rushing title, it’s not likely considering the gap. Any personal disappointment he may feel for not being able to win that honor pales in comparison to what he acknowledges is the disappointment he feels in not being able to reach the playoffs for the second time in his career.
“I mean, disappointed for sure,” Chubb said. “I mean, we had our chances, so I can’t say … I don’t know, we had our chances but we didn’t make the most of it. And, I mean, here we are, we are who we are, we got two more times to go out there and play and play for each other and play for the city. So that’s the bright thing about it, it’s not over yet.”
Jadeveon Clowney returns to the practice field
The Browns received some good news on the injury front on Wednesday when defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was back on the practice field for the first time in a week-and-a-half. Clowney had been in the concussion protocol since leaving the Ravens game late in the first half.
