Senate confirms U.S. Attorney nominees in Nashville, Memphis
- President Joe Biden tapped three for U.S. Attorneys seats in Tennessee in July.
- Two, including Henry Leventis in Middle Tennessee, were confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Thursday.
Henry C. Leventis, President Joe Biden’s pick, was confirmed as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee by the U.S. Senate on Thursday.
Leventis, until now a partner at Nashville firm Spencer Fane, served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the district from 2010-2015. He previously worked as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil rights division after a stint in South Carolina.
He graduated law school from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 2003.
The U.S. Senate judiciary committee recommended he be confirmed Dec. 8.
Biden made nominations for the U.S. Attorney seats in the state’s other divisions at the same time.
Kevin G. Ritz was also confirmed Thursday as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.
“These individuals were chosen for their devotion to enforcing the law, their professionalism, their experience and credentials, their dedication to pursuing equal justice for all, and their commitment to the independence of the Department of Justice,” the White House said in a July statement.
Current Eastern Tennessee Assistant U.S. Attorney Casey T. Arrowood was tapped to step up in that district; he has not been confirmed as of Friday morning.
The U.S. Attorney acts as the top federal law enforcement officer or prosecutor in the district, and represents the government in that and other litigation. The office typically changes hands as federal administrations turn over.
Former Middle Tennessee U.S. Attorney Donald Q. Cochran, a Trump appointee, stepped down from the role at the end of February 2021. Acting U.S. Attorney Mark H. Wildasin has overseen the office since Cochran’s resignation.
