Tennis Honors Seniors At Start of Sunday Match Versus OWU

Wabash honored the three senior members of its 2021-22 tennis team Sunday afternoon prior to its North Coast Athletic Conference West Division match versus visiting Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Little Giants paid tribute to seniors Reed Mathis, Gerald Randle, and Devin Vanyo before taking to the court against the Battling Bishops. The two teams fought back and forth in a match that is likely to determine a final berth in the upcoming 2022 NCAC Men’s Tennis Tournament. The contest came down to a third set in singles play with Wabash falling by a final team score of 5-4.

Wabash (6-8, 0-1 NCAC West) jumped out to a 3-0 lead by capturing all three doubles matches. Cole Borden and Liam Grennon cruised to an 8-2 victory at number one doubles. Alvaro Alsonso-Sanchez and Jett Brownlee claimed an 8-7 victory at number two doubles with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker. Christan Zimmerman and Mathis combined to take an 8-5 win in the third doubles flight.

Alonso-Sanchez scored a straight-sets win at number two doubles by scores of 6-4, 6-3 to give Wabash four team points. The Little Giants were unable to add a final singles victory to win the team portion of the match. The final match of the afternoon at number three singles between Grennon and Alex Riess went to three sets before Reiss claimed the win (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) and give OWU the victory.

Wabash begins a five-game road schedule to close out the 2022 regular season with a trip to Hanover College on Thursday, April 7 for a 4 p.m. contest.
