Alexander wins Cumberland line, completing clean sweep

Tim Alexander, a civil rights lawyer and the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in New Jersey’s 2nd congressional district, has won the Democratic Party line in Cumberland County, meaning that he’ll have the official party endorsement in all six of the district’s counties.

Alexander faces Carolyn Rush and Rev. Curtis Green in the Democratic primary, assuming both end up filing at all. His most prominent primary opponent, former Egg Harbor Township police officer Hector Tavarez, dropped out after Alexander won the Atlantic County Democratic line.

“I want to thank the Cumberland County Democrats for this incredible show of confidence in me,” Alexander said in a statement. “With a united front in all 6 counties now, it is time all South Jersey Democrats come together to retake the district we won in 2018. The time to make a change is now.”

If Alexander wins the nomination, he’ll take on party-switching Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), who was a top Democratic Party target in 2020 but is looking safer this time around. Van Drew raised $587,000 last quarter to Alexander’s paltry $36,080; the first quarter of 2022 ended yesterday, and reports must be released to the public by April 15.
