OSU students teach at local high schools and across Ohio
UTICA – Two local The Ohio State University (OSU) students, Davis Sodders and Ashlee Williams got hands-on experience in the classroom early.
Each year the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education and Leadership (ACEL) at OSU sends students to high schools around the state for 12 weeks to gain real world experience in the classroom.
The agricultural education program at Licking Valley High School welcomed Sodders to assist with guidance from agriculture teacher and FFA advisor Colton Kreager. Sodders is currently a senior in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and an agriscience education major and a minor in production agriculture. He’s a graduate of Liberty Union High School in Baltimore, Ohio.
Williams will teach at Utica High School’s program under the guidance of agriculture teacher and FFA advisor Gina Neff. Williams is currently a senior at CFAES and an agriscience education major and a minor in production agriculture. She’s a graduate of Northridge High School in Johnstown, Ohio.
Dr. Shannon Washburn, professor of agriscience education and chair of ACEL says “Student teaching prepares our students for their future roles in the classroom by allowing them to lead an agriscience education program… This experience allows them to see into their future and get excited for the next step in their career.”
Agriscience education is one of three undergraduate majors within ACEL. The major prepares students to acquire a license to teach agricultural science in secondary high schools through extensive training in agriculture science, educational psychology, instructional methods and youth development.
