Louisiana to enforce restrictions on vape products

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– The Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control will resume enforcing a law restricting the sale of vapor products. This comes almost two months since the law was temporarily halted.

On March 18, Louisiana’s Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control will resume the enforcement of prohibiting vapor products and nicotine alternatives not on the states, V.A.P.E. Directory. The initial bill, signed into law back in June of 2023 prohibited the sale of electronic cigarette products like vapes under certain circumstances. It wasn’t until January of 2024 when a judge granted an injunction temporarily stopping the restriction.

The owner of Blazin Cloudz vape shop says vapes, vaping products, and nicotine alternatives are a large percentage of shops like his.

“So I’d say vapes are like 60% of the business, pretty much, so it’s a big hit,” said Sam.

In addition to restricting certain products, there will be a fine for any retailer or manufacture who displays or sells a product not on the V.A.P.E. Directory. They will face a thousand dollar fine each day each product is available or displayed until it is removed or added to the directory.

Sam says once the law goes into effect, this will have an impact on not only his business but other business that carry and sell the restricted items.

“There’s a lot of stores in the state that are really going to be affected by stuff,” said Sam.

He says he believes the restriction is a way to crack down on vaping and he’s not sure he will be able to sell the items before they become restricted.

“There’s no way we’ll be able to sell what we have in a couple of days, but we’ll try,” said Sam.
