VIDEO: Proficiency in Math and Reading at 30-Year Low – The American Spectator


The recent National Assessment of Educational Progress scores show that schools are failing at their most basic task. Math and reading proficiency is in a pattern of steep decline — down 4 points in reading and 9 in math — with both scores lower than they’ve been in 30 years. This report is only the latest in a long string of research pointing to schools’ decline and the disastrous resulting outcomes for students. Made obvious during COVID lockdowns, the public education system has been deficient for years. While teachers unions and progressive administrators maintain their hold, we can continue to expect failure.

Dr. George Charles Roche III wrote that [t]he lowered ethical standards of our age have been matched by a decline of intellect” for the Foundation for Economic Education in 1969. We’ve observed nothing to disprove his observation.
