Licking Valley softball wins early showdown with Heights

HANOVER ― Abbe McNabb tripled, doubled and singled and struck out 12 in the circle Monday, as Licking Valley downed visiting Licking Heights 8-4 in an early-season battle of Licking County League-Buckeye Division unbeatens.

Sylvie Devore went 4-for-4, Taylor Penick knocked in two runs and Addison Justice delivered an RBI triple for the Panthers (3-0, 1-0).

Evie Hays had three hits two RBIs, Ali West doubled and Kaylyn Hopf added an RBI for the Hornets (4-1, 1-1).

Walters dominant

Macy Walters allowed just one hit through six innings, fanning eight, as visiting Johnston blanked Lakewood 5-0 Monday in the LCL-Cardinal Division.

Addie Triplett tripled and singled with an RBI and Addy Zak doubled and singled with an RBI for the Johnnies (2-0, 2-0). Aubrey Delcato rapped three singles with an RBI, Dakota Staffan added two hits and Makayla Fair knocked in a run.

Dani Stewart had two singles and losing pitcher Becca Streets struck out 10 for the Lancers (3-3, 0-2).

Heath romps

Renae Cunningham struck out 10 in a four-hitter through five innings and Shelby Moore pounded a three-run homer, leading host Heath to a 12-1 LCL-Cardinal win against Utica on Monday.

Kyndall Spicer (double and single), Cunningham (two singles) and Sydney Cottrell (double) all had two RBIs for the Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0) while Kristal Keeran had two singles.

Lauren Schmitt had two singles and an RBI for the Redskins (1-3, 0-1).

Green Wave rolls

Avery Nagel pitched a three-hitter and socked a homer and double with five RBI, powering visiting Newark Catholic past Northridge 13-0 Monday in the LCL-Cardinal.

Maris Knowlton drilled a double and two singles for the Green Wave (3-1, 1-0), while Joanna Bailey doubled and singled and Ava Heffley chipped in with two singles.

Kenzie Hannahs doubled for the Vikings (1-2, 0-1).

Newark nipped

Host Olentangy Liberty (4-1) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday, toppling Newark 4-3.

Losing pitcher Jaylen Jackson slammed a two-run homer for the Wildcats (3-3), while Brooke Nelson and Sarah Sickels each collected three singles and Dez Osler doubled.

BASEBALL

Valley wins opener

Evan Lichtenauer and Wyatt Binckley teamed for a five-hitter for Licking Valley on Monday in a season-opening 6-3 LCL-Buckeye Division win against visiting Licking Heights.

Lichtenauer doubled, Theo Walsh and Binckley had run-scoring hits, and Gavin Bragg and Gunnar Bowman each stole two bases for the Panthers.

Tyler Von Bargen had two hits and an RBI, while Jake Lopinto and Tyler Brown doubled for the Hornets (2-2, 0-1).

Heath comes back

Host Heath rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, scoring runs in the sixth and seventh innings to come from behind and beat Utica 4-3 Monday in the LCL-Cardinal.

Riley Baum pitched two innings in relief of Tannar Patterson to get the win for the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0). Patterson doubled and singled, Connor Corbett, Hayden Woodward and Jacob Bunn each had two singles, Kaden Green doubled, Cooper Bradley had a sacrifice fly and Conner Toomey an RBI.

Tyler Collura had two singles with two RBI, Isaak Wogan also had two hits and Gavin Chinn doubled for the Redskins (2-3, 0-1).

NC no-hits Vikings

Eli Morris, Theo Talbott and Cooper Leibas teamed for a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Newark Catholic on Monday in a 13-0 LCL-Cardinal win against host Northridge.

Grant Moore doubled and singled, Mikey Hess and Nate Ferrell also had two hits, Miller Hutchison doubled with two RBIs, Joe Stanley also knocked in two runs and Morris added a double for the Green Wave (3-1, 1-0).
