Licking Heights’ Richard Storts, Landon Cahill win wrestling titles
Richard Storts and Landon Cahill protected their home mats Saturday, winning titles for the host Hornets during the Licking Heights Invitational.
Storts (120) finished 4-0 with three pins, including against Fairfield Union’s James Worthington in the final. Cahill (126) finished 4-0 with one pin, beating Whitehall’s Aidan Jordan 10-3 in the final.
Valley’s Hornfeck, Lakewood’s Taylor win
Two Licking County wrestlers won titles during the Hammer and Anvil Invitational at Western Brown.
Licking Valley’s Mason Hornfeck (120) finished 5-0 with two pins, beating Campbell County’s Jeremiah Wilbers 5-2 in the final. Lakewood’s Josh Taylor (165) finished 5-0 with three pins, including against Wilmington’s Gage Davis in the final.
Watkins Memorial’s Nolan Perry (106) and Scott Speakman (144) each took runner-up as did Valley’s Noah Curry (113). Lakewood’s Caleb Rafferty (120) and Valley’s Devyn Boyd (144) each placed third.
Smith places
Jibreel Smith (126) finished 5-2 to place seventh for Newark during the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay.
At Fredericktown, Carson Taylor (120), Andre Mercier (144), Landon Caw (190) and David Wheeler (Hwt.) each placed third for the Wildcats.
Two place for Granville
Corbin Bell (144) finished 4-2 to place seventh and Keegan Finley (150) 4-3 to place eighth for Granville during the Top Gun Invitational at Alliance.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Johnstown edges NC
Abigail Adkins scored five of her team-high 23 points in overtime, lifting Johnstown to a 51-44 victory at Newark Catholic in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.
Adkins also totaled eight assists for the Johnnies (7-7, 6-4), who closed to within one game of NC (11-3, 7-3) and Heath. Michaela Perfors added 11 points, Kylie Sharp nine and Lauren Baughman 13 rebounds.
Kylie Gibson led the Green Wave 17 points. Sophie Peloquin added 12 points and Fini Kaiser nine.
Heath wins at Lakewood
Caroline Robertson’s 15 points led a balanced attack in Heath’s 52-42 victory at Lakewood in LCL-Cardinal play.
Taliyah Holmes and Peyton DelCecato added 12 points apiece for the Bulldogs (10-5, 6-3), who pulled into a first-place tie in the loss column with Newark Catholic. Rachel Crist scored 10 points for the Lancers (5-9, 2-7), and Grace Sturgell added nine.
Watkins fends off Heights
Ella Perry totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds for Watkins Memorial in a 41-35 victory at rival Licking Heights in LCL-Buckeye play.
Cameryn Wheeler added 10 points and nine steals and Kalleigh Rennie nine points for the Warriors (10-5, 6-3). Amya Thompson led the Hornets (3-11, 1-7) with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Karsyn Johnson added eight points and eight rebounds.
Granville wins at home
Aliyah Moore buried five 3-pointers and totaled 19 points, shooting Granville to a 60-49 victory against visiting Zanesville in LCL-Buckeye play.
Ava Gossman added 16 points and Harper Annarino 15 for the first-place Blue Aces (13-1, 9-0). Jersey Draughn and Kandrea Sowers scored 20 points apiece for the Blue Devils (6-7, 5-4).
GCA falls on road
Granville Christian was unable to hold up in the fourth quarter, falling 52-39 at Madison Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Ellie Flowers led the Lions (7-5, 4-2) with 11 points, and Brianna Hubbard, Skyler Weekley and Chloe Hamilton added seven each.
Liberty rallies
A 19-3 onslaught in the fourth quarter gave Liberty Christian a 35-33 victory at Shekinah Christian on Friday in MOCAL play.
Great Belair and Leah Adair totaled eight points apiece for the Eagles (3-9, 3-3). Shelby Carr added seven points and Kaitlyn Mohr 13 rebounds.
Newark falls
Brie Gingras’ 17 points and four steals led Newark in a 57-45 loss to Southwest Academy (Canada) at Pickerington Central.
Ally Carr added 11 points, Jenna Shackleford 10 and Syncere Royster six rebounds for the Wildcats (8-7).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Valley wins at home
Jacob Curry scored nine of Licking Valley’s 27 first-quarter points, sending the Panthers to a 60-48 victory against visiting River View.
Curry and Gunner Bowman totaled 14 points apiece for the Panthers (6-7). Kam Walker added 11 points and A.J. Rapol eight.
GCA beats Madison
Eli Cooper scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the first quarter, fueling Granville Christian in a 60-39 victory at Madison Christian in MOCAL play.
Andrew Benvie added 15 points, Zac Leija nine and Bentley Johnson seven for the Lions (3-9, 2-4).
Heath falls
Preston DeVito’s 19 points led Heath (8-3) in a 50-39 loss at Sheridan.
BOWLING
Lakewood claims crown
Vica Pletcher’s 601 series led the Lakewood girls to the championship during the Mount Vernon Nazarene Tournament.
Heath takes runner-up
Summer Mohler’s high game of 233 and series of 518 placed her third and led the Heath girls to a runner-up finish during the Warrior Classic.
Kat Boyd added a high game of 154 and Kayleigh Goings 147 for the Bulldogs. Bryce Holmes’ three-game series of 519 led the Heath boys, who finished fourth, and Oliver Walton added a high game of 247 and Josh Dover 210.
