Kalida knocks Spencerville from unbeaten ranks


KALIDA — The host Wildcats became the first team to defeat Spencerville in boys high school basketball this season with a 55-45 victory Saturday night.

Jaden Smith had 17 points and EJ Miller scored 16 for Kalida (6-3). Owen Sensabaugh had 12 points and Josh Henline scored 10 for the Bearcats (6-1).

LIMA — Dawson Clay (24), Landon Callahan (20) and Jabaz DuPree (10) each scored in double digits for Temple Christian. Jay Schroeder (18), Preston Rutschilling (11) and Andrew Leffel (10) were double digit scorers for New Knoxville.

Celina 25

CELINA — Jadyn Merscher had 17 points and Jake Knapke scored 11 in Marion Local’s season opener after winning the Division VI state football championship. Braylon Gabes led Celina with nine points.

FORT JENNINGS — Austin Bockrath had 15 points and Reide Jackson and Kohen Cox each scored 13 for the visiting Lancers. Jarron Swick had 23 points and Owen Calvelage scored nine for the Musketeers.

Simpson’s point total

Ayden Simpson had 30 points in Perry’s 68-62 victory Friday night against Hardin Northern. His points total was incorrect in Saturday’s Area Roundup. The Commodores improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Central Conference.

Cavalier Invitational

COLDWATER — The host Cavaliers (227 points) finished second behind St. Xavier (240) from Kentucky among the 23 teams.

Coldwater’s Shane Ontrop (190 pounds) and Will Fox (215) won their weight divisions and teammates Tyler Overman (120 pounds) and Tanner Stammen (138) each finished second. Brady Hamilton (126), Austin Hamilton (132), Sam Obringer (165) and Troy Milligan (285) each were third also for the Cavaliers. Evan Cox was the top finisher for Ottawa-Glandorf with a fifth place at 215 pounds. O-G (18) finished 19th.

LIMA — Owen Steidl had the high game (223) and two-game series (435) for Shawnee at 20th Century Lanes.

Blake Bishop (248) had the high game and Jaden Davisson (375) had the high series for Bath.

Keaton Bruns had the high game (225) and two-game series (442) for Coldwater.

Ohio Northern 57, Capital 41

ADA — Ohio Northern parlayed an early scoring run and strong defensive play to a win over Capital at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Comets to 8-3, 2-2.

Sophomore Layla Dials (Willard) came off the bench and scored a career-high 12 points to go with four rebounds and two assists to lead ONU.

Sophomore Brooke Allen (Woodville/Woodmore) tallied 10 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Abi Akamine (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) added nine points and four rebounds.

Junior Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) finished with seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

UNOH 74, UC-Clermont 69

LIMA — After trailing most of the game, UNOH (8-4) rallied late to take control in the fourth and finish off a win over UC-Clermont (7-4).

Jada Haines (SR/Akron, Ohio) finished with a game high 22 points shooting 8-18 (44%) from the field.

Anderson 75, Bluffton 69 (OT)

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University dropped a decision to Anderson in overtime. Anderson improved to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Heartland Conference, while Bluffton slipped to 5-3 and 1-3 in the HCAC.

The Beavers trailed 63-59 with 1:31 to play in regulation before an Olivia Zender (Fostoria/Hopewell Louden) triple made it a one-point game. Morgan Smith (Arlington) split a pair of charity tosses with 40 seconds sending the game to overtime.

Smith finished with 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Bluffton 63, Kalamazoo 62

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Bluffton University hit a pair of late threes before a Kegan Owen (Indianapolis, Ind./Greenwood) buzzer-beater gave the Beavers a win against Kalamazoo. Bluffton upped its season mark to 2-6, while Kalamazoo fell to 1-8 on the season.

Owen took the inbounds pass with seven ticks remaining, fumbled, recovered and calmly sank the game-winner with three tenths of a second on the clock, sending the visitors to their second win of the season. Triples by Michael Stammen (Versailles) and Brady Wheeler over the final 2:13 set the stage for Owen’s game-winner.

Capital 72, Ohio Northern 62

ADA — Freshman Will Miller (Ottoville) scored a career-high 20 points Saturday afternoon as Ohio Northern fell to Capital at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears fall to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while the Comets improve to 5-5, 2-2.

Miller was 6-of-7 from the foul line and added five rebounds and three steals to his game-high point total.

Senior C.J. Napier (Miamisburg/Bishop Fenwick) was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 13 points for ONU.

Senior Adam Scott (Wapakoneta) added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Wright State 111, UNOH 59

FAIRBORN — Led by Brandon Noel’s 21 points, the Wright State Raiders (6-6) defeated the the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers (5-9). UNOH was led in scoring by Cedric Delancy Jr., who finished with nine points.
