Newark girls bowling wins 25-team holiday tournament
Newark’s girls bowling team rolled the first clean game in program history Saturday en route to the championship in the 25-team Holiday Baker Marathon Tournament at Columbus Square Bowling Palace.
After qualifying third for the championship round, the Wildcats defeated Marion Harding, Gahanna, then Fairborn in the championship game.
The team is coached by Denise Wiley, and members include Makayla Adams, Joey Hupp, Andy Hupp, Jade Gabor, Taylor Enright, Nadia Liesen and Amelia Beuna.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Heath nips Utica
In a Licking County League-Cardinal Division clash that saw 23 3-pointers made, Heath outscored visiting Utica 19-14 in the fourth quarter, rallying for a 63-62 victory.
Jaxon Duston scored seven of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and Brayden Bayles had seven of his 10 for the Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0), who drilled 11 3s. Will Robertson hit four 3-pointers and tallied 13 points, and Jordan Kaminsky chipped in with 10.
Brody McDaniel rifled home eight 3-pointers for 24 points for Utica (2-1, 1-1), which canned 12 3s. Trenton Collins also tossed in 24 with a trio of 3s.
Schneider stars
Caleb Schneider cashed in 18 of his 23 points in the first half and made five 3-pointers Saturday, as host Johnstown romped past Lakewood 56-19 in the LCL-Cardinal Division.
Cody Siegfried added 11 points for the Johnnies (3-2, 2-0).
The Lancers slipped to 1-5, 0-2.
ZHS nips Watkins
Chase Massie hit for 17 points Saturday and Ethan Ryan 14 for Watkins Memorial (1-2, 0-2), but it wasn’t quite enough as host Zanesville picked up its first win of the season with a 57-56 LCL-Buckeye Division victory.
Xavier Riley pumped in 18 with four 3s, Rashaud Hampton added 14 and Mikey Johnston 12 for the Blue Devils (1-3, 1-1).
Hornets rout Valley
Host Licking Heights improved to 3-3, 2-0 Saturday with a 61-31 LCL-Buckeye Division win against Licking Valley.
The Panthers dipped to 0-3, 0-1.
No details were reported.
NC drops opener
Newark Catholic fought back from an early 20-6 deficit Saturday , but came up short in a 52-48 loss to Sheridan in the Tiger Roundball Classic at Pickerington Central.
Braylon Bates made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the Green Wave, playing its season opener. Bobby Franks added 13 points and Trey Spurrier eight.
Reed Coconis hit for 16, Caden Sheridan 11 and A.J. Winders 10 for the Generals (2-2).
WRESTLING
Sheehan, Halenar shine
Newark Catholic’s Brendan Sheehan went 5-0, with three pins and a technical fall Saturday, winning the 165-pound title at the Kilted Classic at Highland.
Griffin Halenar also went 5-0 with four pins to win at 285 for the Green Wave. Brian Luft (132) and Nico Richards (144) both placed fourth.
SWIMMING
Blue Aces take third
Hannah Hardin figured in two championships Saturday, helping the Granville girls place third out of 15 teams in the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College.
Hardin won the 100 freestyle in :54.1 and also anchored the victorious 200 freestyle relay (1:42.67) of Lydia Sturgeon, Caroline Otter and Brooke Lemert. Lemert was second in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Sturgeon was second in the 100 freestyle. The 200 medley relay of Sturgeon, Grace Largent, Lemert and Hardin also took second, while Hardin placed second in the 50 freestyle and Sturgeon finished third.
Delaware Hayes won the girls title with 179, while Granville was third with 134.5, Newark Catholic tied for fifth with 60, Watkins Memorial was seventh with 59 and Northridge 11th.
Ava Dutton of Watkins won the 200 individual medley in 2:15.32, while Olivia Crock placed fourth in the 100 butterfly. Isabella Pribonic finished third in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 freestyle for NC, while Ella Schirtzinger was third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 200 IM, and Gracie Collins took fourth in the 500 freestyle. Northridge’s Alexandra Cannone was fourth in the 100 freestyle.
In the boys race, Granville was third out of the 15 teams with 109 points, while Columbus Academy won with 208. Watkins Memorial was seventh with 50.
Jacob Teter captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.45 to lead the Blue Aces. He also swam on the second-place 200 freestyle relay with Nolan Schneider, Miles Baker and Josh Remlinger, while the same quartet finished third in the 200 medley relay. Schneider was second in the 200 freestyle and Remlinger third in the 50 freestyle.
Caden May paced Watkins with his third place in the 100 backstroke.
Newark boys fourth
Newark’s boys finished fourth out of 14 teams Saturday and the girls were sixth in the River View Invitational at Coshocton High School.
The 400 freestyle relay of Mitchell Mazzone, Leyton Ricketts, Turin Hatfield and Jeremy Schweiger placed second for the Wildcats, while the same quartet teamed up for fourth in the 200 medley relay. Ricketts also took fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Maryn Hatfield finished second for the Newark girls in the 400 freestyle, while Morgan Woodruff swam third in the 200 IM.
