Dowd Downs No. 17 Ohio State With Late Goal


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Junior Jimmy Dowd Jr. (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) factored in both goals while scoring the game-winning goal to lift No. 6/5 Penn State past No. 17 Ohio State, 2-1, n Big Ten Conference action on Friday evening inside Pegula Ice Arena.

Penn State improves to 14-3-0 on the year and 6-3-0 in Big Ten play with the victory while the Buckeyes drops to 9-7-1 overall and 4-5-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring late in the opening period with a powerplay goal as senior Connor MacEachern (Brooklin, Ontario) redirected a shot from the point by Dowd Jr. past the blocker of Buckeye net-minder Jakub Dobes for the 1-0 edge at the 18:29 mark.
  • Ohio State evened the contest in the middle frame as Cole McWard sent a shot from the point through traffic that Nittany Lion junior goaltender Liam Souliere (Brampton, Ontario) never saw for the 1-1 score at 16:02 of the second period.
  • Moments after a powerplay expired it was Dowd Jr. blasting one on net from the right point the deflected off a Buckeye stick and through Dobes for the 2-1 lead at 14:29 of the third period.

GOALTENDING

  • Souliere runs his record to 12-3-0 on the year after stopping 35-of-36 shots while his counterpart, Dobes, drops to 9-7-1 after making 30 saves in the setback.
  • Souliere’s 12 victories this season continue to lead the nation and are now just one shy of Eamon McAdam for fifth on the Penn State single-season wins list.
  • Souliere’s 20 career victories are now just one shy of Oskar Autio for the third-most all-time for a Nittany Lion net-minder.

NOTES

  • The Nittany Lions were outshot for the first time this season as the Buckeyes held the slim 36-32 edge in the shot department.
  • Penn State went 1-for-5 with the man-advantage and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
  • Penn State once again scored the opening goal of the game for the 13th time in 17 games this season improving to 12-1-0 in such games.
  • The first period assist for Dowd gives him 35 for his career as he is now just one shy of Vince Pedrie for seventh on the all-time assist list for Penn State defensemen while his eighth career goal ties him with four other Nittany Lions, including teammate Paul DeNaples, for seventh on the all-time goal scoring list by Nittany Lion defensemen.
  • The multi-point game is the third this season for Dowd and the 11th of his career.
  • Senior Kevin Wall (Penfield, N.Y.) had the secondary assist on each goal to register his second multi-point effort of the season and the 16th of his career.
  • Penn State remains a perfect 9-0-0 this season in series opening games while improving to 6-1-0 in games decided by one goal. The Nittany Lions have now held their opponents to two or less goals in 11 of their first 17 games this season.
