Florida Senate pauses review of Andrew Warren’s suspension


The Florida Senate has paused the review of Andrew Warren’s suspension. According to the Florida Constitution, Florida Senate conducts a review of the suspension of an elected official following a governor’s order to suspend them. The process determines whether the suspended official will be removed or reinstated. Gov. Ron DeSantis had suspended Warren — who was elected twice as state attorney in Hillsborough County — for “neglect of duty” and made the announcement at a news conference. During the announcement of Warren’s suspension, DeSantis referred to two letters Warren and other prosecutors signed, in which the letters stated they would not prosecute people who “seek, provide, or support abortions” or people who condemned restricting gender-affirming health care. “When you’re saying you’re not going to enforce certain laws you don’t like, that’s a neglect of duty. It asks a judge to compel the governor to rescind his illegal order, restore Warren to office and prohibit DeSantis from taking similar illegal actions against Warren in the future.Florida Senate President Wilton Simpson notified Warren and state senators of the review’s pause in a latter. “I have directed that any Senate proceedings regarding Executive Order of Suspension 22-176 be held in abeyance until a final determination in this pending litigation has been rendered,” the letter says.
