1) Cleveland Neighborhood Doesn’t Wait For City To Act After Child Is Killed
Speed bumps and a caution sign were installed on West 50th Street, near the spot where 5-year-old Apoline Asumani was killed by a reckless hit-and-run driver in April. Only the city of Cleveland didn’t install them. Neighborhood residents, working with an anonymous team described as “urbanist guerillas” by Cleveland Scene, did the work.
“… those who installed the speed bumps did so to make drivers slow down on a street where children play. But they also did it to send a message to city leaders, to publicize their impatience and to demonstrate that interventions to create safer streets can be low-cost and straightforward to implement,” writes Sam Allard for Scene.
Three children have been killed on Cleveland streets by hit-and-run drivers in the last six weeks.
2) DeWine-FirstEnergy Connections? The Ohio Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against Gov. Mike DeWine’s administration, saying they’re breaking the state’s public records law in turning over documents with information blacked out. Democrats are searching for connections between DeWine and two FirstEnergy executives who admitted bribing former House Speaker Larry Householder and former Public Utilities Commission chair Sam Randazzo. The company agreed to a $230 million fine last summer.

3) Pot Expungement Delay: Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb’s rollout of a well-intentioned plan to wipe clean thousands of low-level marijuana cases was legally messy and now requires a new approach. Ohio laws may not grant Cleveland the ability to initiate the sealing of criminal records without the defendants’ involvement.

1 Bit Of History
- In the 1910s, George Gund Jr.’s first job after college (he was a Harvard man) was president of Cleveland-based Gund Brewing Company — the family business. Junior brought a marketing man’s eye to the local beer scene. The brewery’s most popular beer was called the Clevelander.
