John Kennedy announces massive funds for 2022 Senate campaign

Louisiana Republican U.S. Sen. John Kennedy is amassing a massive campaign fund war chest for his 2022 re-election bid, announcing he has $11 million in the bank for the race.

Kennedy’s report came a day after Baton Rouge community activist Gary Chambers Jr. joined fellow Democrat Luke Mixon, a retired Navy pilot, in the race.

“As Louisianans begin a new year, I’m again humbled by the support they’ve shown throughout 2021,” Kennedy said in a press release. “I’ll keep fighting for Louisianans and their families like I always have and will continue to proudly be their voice against all the madness in Washington.”

Kennedy, 69, who raised $3.3 million in the final quarter of 2021, is seeking a second term in the Senate after emerging from a 24-candidate primary field in 2016.

He easily outdistanced Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell, a Democrat, in the runoff election 61% to 39%.

Kennedy’s seat is widely considered safe in an increasingly red state and listed as “solid Republican” by The Cook Political Report.

But Mixon believes he has a path as a moderate Democrat in the image of Gov. John Bel Edwards, while the more progressive Chambers believes his message of expanding the social safety net will resonate in a poor state.
