Cincinnati Enquirer names high school athletes of week for April 15

In a vote that ended April 15, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through April 10.

The winter 2022 certificates have been mailed and should have arrived at athletic departments.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to [email protected].

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Send your nominations by Monday morning for this week’s high school sports action.

The winners are:

Ohio boys spring team of the week: Lakota East lacrosse – The team finished up the week with two big Greater Miami Conference wins over Oak Hills 8-7 and Lakota West 9-8, moving the Thunderhawks to 3-0 in the GMC.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys spring team of the week: Covington Catholic lacrosse – Covington Catholic finished this week and added to the season record of 12-0 with wins over Ryle, St. Henry and Walton-Verona. Covington Catholic has three players ranked in the top 5 in the state in total points scored.

Ohio girls spring team of the week: Mount Notre Dame softball – The Cougars stayed undefeated and picked up a pair of conference wins, topping St. Ursula 15-4, Ursuline Academy 9-1.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls spring team of the week: East Central tennis – East Central took a 3-2 decision from Notre Dame Academy on April 7.

Ohio big school baseball player: Bryce Perkins, Milford – The senior went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in Milford’s 11-9 win over West Clermont April 4.

Ohio small school baseball player: Connor Davis, Reading – The freshman went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI in Reading’s 11-8 win over Deer Park April 4.

Northern Kentucky baseball player: Kadin Wright, Lloyd Memorial – He pitched six innings and got 6 strikeouts, 4 hits and one earned run and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, home run and a single in the 7-1 win over Villa Madonna April 4. In an April 9 doubleheader, he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a single, two walks and an RBI in a win over Holmes and a loss to Calvary Christian.

Boys lacrosse: E.J. Upton, Lakota East – The senior anchored the defense wrapping up the week with 10 ground balls and 5 caused turnovers.

Girls lacrosse: Aly Prasinos, Ursuline – The senior midfielder led the Lions to 3 mins this week against Lakota East, Mount Notre Dame, and St. Ursula. She had a total of 12 goals and 11 assists. Leads the GGCL in assists and draw controls.

Ohio big school softball player: Kiley King, Mount Notre Dame – The senior tossed seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball, striking out eight, in MND’s 9-1 win over Ursuline April 7.

Ohio small school softball player: Izzie Carroll, New Richmond – The freshman threw a complete-game eight-inning shutout, yielding just three hits and striking out six, to lead New Richmond to a 1-0 win over Taylor April 7.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball player: Cam Kratzer, Villa Madonna – She had three hits, three runs scored and five RBI in VMA’s win over St. Henry in the All “A” Classic 9th Region tournament. She also pitched an inning.

Boys singles tennis: Ethan Hawryschuk, Moeller – He won first singles against his Summit Country Day opponent April 4, helping Moeller to a 4-1 team win.

Boys doubles tennis: Leo Joffe-Graham Sorg, Cincinnati Country Day – The first-doubles team got a win over their Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy opponents to help CCD to a 4-1 team win.

Girls tennis: Heidi Kane, East Central – She got a first-singles win over her Notre Dame opponent, 6-3, 4-6 and 1-0 in the Trojan’s 3-2 team win over NDA.

Ohio boys big school track and field athlete: Austin Miller, Lebanon – He won the boys long jump at the Clash of the Titans, Sycamore High School, with a score of 21’2.5”.

Ohio boys small school track and field athlete: Jah’Mal Hutsell, Roger Bacon – He won the boys long jump at the Miami Valley Conference relays April 7 with a score of 18’11.75”.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete: Luke Meagher, Covington Catholic – He won the 3,200-meter run April 11 at the Princeton Invitational.

Ohio girls big school track and field athlete: May Humpert, Mercy McAuley – She won the 800-meter run at the Princeton Invitational April 11 in a time of 2:22.04.

Ohio girls small school track and field athlete: Emma Kate Schnieber, Cincinnati Country Day – She won the pole vault at the Miami Valley Conference relays April 7 with a score of 8’9”.

Northern Kentucky girls track and field athlete: Olivia Schumacher, Newport Central Catholic – The freshman won the 200, 400 and 4-x-200 relay, and finished second in the 100 at the Ludlow meet April 4-5.

Boys volleyball: Peter Wilke, Roger Bacon – The outside hitter helped lead Roger Bacon to a 3-0 week against Oak Hills, Taylor and Royalmont. Combined in these games, Peter Wilke had 34 kills and 8 aces.
