Cavs owner Dan Gilbert’s real estate company hires architect to shape Bedrock’s plans for

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Bedrock, the real estate arm of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert’s empire, said Tuesday that it added a noted architect to a team it assembled to plan and build on a large portion of land along the Cuyahoga River near downtown.

David Adjaye will join a team of consultants, city officials and other groups as it works on a plan for 130 acres of riverfront east of downtown, the Detroit-based development company said in a news release Tuesday. He will also help shape the future of Tower City Center, which Bedrock CEO Kofi Bonner said was being transformed from a “mall” into a “marketplace.”

The overarching vision for the area, which includes the Collision Bend area of the river near Tower City and portions of Canal Road, includes transforming long-underused properties near booming neighborhoods in Tremont and Ohio City, as well as downtown itself, officials said in a news conference in September. The hope is to create another neighborhood through the development over the next 25-30 years.

The city last year entered into an agreement with Bedrock to study development prospects on the riverfront land. Bedrock owns about 30% of the land necessary to see its plan through, though officials have said they want to work with other landowners there.

Adjaye, a Ghanan-British architect who heads international design firm Adjaye Associates, has worked on projects around the world, with his most notable one being the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., which opened in 2016.

Bedrock also said Tuesday that it had hired Osborn Engineering to lead a civil engineering team for the property.

The plans dovetail with “Vision for the Valley,” a plan adopted by the city Planning Commission that serves as a roadmap for development and investment in the area surrounding an eight-mile section of the river.
