Leon Ware Jr. 1924-2022 | News, Sports, Jobs


FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Leon Ware Jr., our World War II vet, passed away in his sleep on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022, on his 98th birthday.

He was a regular churchgoer while he was living in Ohio, being born Feb. 27, 1924, the child of a Baptist minister, Mr. Leon Ware Sr., and mother, Mary Henderson Ware, who preceded him in death.

He was a doting grandfather, actively involved in their lives, spending time with them, helping any way he could, especially with their sports. He lived his last three years in Fayetteville, Ga., with his granddaughter, Sandra Jean Green (Kirk).

Preceding him in death were his sisters, Gertrude Colbert, Naomi Green and Ethel Kate Ware, and his children, Audrey Jean Calbert and Charles Wesley Ware.

He leaves behind his brother, Lucius Ware of Southampton, N.Y., and a daughter, Linda Ware Frith of North Chesterfield, Va.; also his beloved grandchildren, LaTonya Calbert, Sandra J. Green (Kirk), Chorsie Calbert III (Tanya), Leon Darnell Calbert, Michelle Calbert and Heather Frith.

He also was blessed to live long enough to see, know and be loved by his great-grandchildren, Tawnyetta Calbert, Robert Calbert, Dominique Dorsey, Ashley Calbert, Dante Calbert, Leon (Manny) Calbert, Chorsie Calbert IV, Paul Taylor, Ah’Lexis Daniel, Da’Jia Daniel, Gabriel Calbert and King-Leon Calbert; his stepgrandchildren, Roderick Lewis, Kaylin Green, Chelsey Green and Kyra Green; and a host of family, including 20 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close family members.
