PARKERSBURG — Middle school students from Wood and Ritchie county schools tested their knowledge about West Virginia history Friday at the 2022 History Bowl at Blennerhassett Middle School.

Edison Middle School won the Region V tournament and Jackson Middle School Team 1 was the runner-up. Jackson had two teams.

Edison and Jackson will compete in the West Virginia State History Bowl on April 26 at the Culture Center in Charleston.

The West Virginia History Bowl is an academic competition that takes place in April every year, Ashlee Beatty, director of curriculum and instruction for Wood County Schools, said.

“So, annually school teams compete to earn a spot in that state-level competition,” Beatty said. “Today’s teams have participated in local scrimmages to prepare and have practiced regularly at school.”

Winning in the regional competition will allow them a spot at the state tournament, she said.

The History Bowl is for eighth-grade students who have spent the year studying West Virginia history in class and is an opportunity for them to show what they know, Beatty said.

Among questions asked included “What river flows into the Potomac River at Harper’s Ferry?” The answer: the Shenandoah River.

“Which baseball legend nicknamed ‘Stan the Man’ played for Williamson in the Mountain State in 1938 and 1939?” The answer: Stan Musial.

“Which political body at the county level governs the operation of county governments in West Virginia?” The answer: County Commission.
