Woman, child dead after fire in Ohio home; cause sought

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A woman hospitalized after a house fire in Ohio that killed a child last week has also died of her injuries, authorities said.

South Zanesville fire crews dispatched to the Springfield Township home at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday found the structure engulfed in flames, officials said.

Fire Chief Russell Taylor said firefighters found the woman collapsed in the doorway with only her feet outside the house, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported. Muskingum County sheriff’s office deputies provided aid to her outside and she was taken to a hospital.

Neighbors reported that a child was still inside but gave conflicting information about where the child might be, officials said. One firefighter tried to enter the home through a rear window but couldn’t see anyone inside, Taylor said. The child was later found dead.

Another person in the home told firefighters that the power had gone out, and the woman went to the basement to check the situation but then yelled for everyone to get out because there was a fire.

The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center said Friday afternoon that the woman had died, Taylor said. He said the names of the victims couldn’t be released yet. The Ohio State fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
