Lorain Police arrest man, woman on drug charges, prompting schools lockdown – Morning


Two people were arrested and police confiscated drugs, cash and guns in two raids Jan. 21 in Lorain, one of which forced several Lorain City Schools buildings to go on lockdown.

Christopher L. King, 35, of 1313 W. 21st St., and Latilka L. Calhoun, 41, of 901 W. 14th St., were arrested at their homes by the Lorain Police Narcotics Unit, with the Lorain police SWAT team and detectives, the Elyria Police Narcotics Unit, U.S. Marshal Task Force officers and the FBI.

The investigation was led by Lorain Detective Cielo Rodriguez after it was learned that King and Calhoun were working in concert with one another to distribute crack cocaine in the city of Lorain, police said.

Detectives recovered about 15 grams of crack cocaine, one pound of marijuana, suspected Xanax and oxycodone pills, two rifles, two handguns and over $61,000 cash, investigators said.

Calhoun was arrested on a drug trafficking charge stemming from the investigation, while King was arrested on a drug trafficking charge as well as weapons violations, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing and King and Calhoun could face additional charges.

King and Calhoun both have prior drug convictions.

King also has prior convictions for aggravated robbery, kidnapping and robbery and currently is on parole for these convictions, according to Lorain police.

This investigation was sparked by information provided by citizens in the neighborhood as well as proactive efforts of the patrol division of Lorain Police Department.

The Lorain Police Narcotics Unit encourages anyone who suspects that drug activity is taking place in their neighborhood to contact 440-204-2108 or submit a tip via tip 411.

Those wishing to provide information can remain anonymous.

During one of the raids, several Lorain Schools buildings were on a 10-minute lockdown early Jan. 21 as authorities conducted a raid in the area, according to a news release from Lorain Schools.

At 7:30 a.m., several buildings were put on the lockdown as a safety precaution while Lorain police conducted the operation.

Buildings affected were Lorain High School, General Johnnie Wilson Middle School, Frank Jacinto Elementary, Washington Elementary, the Administration Center and Warehouse, according to the release.

“Our thanks to the Lorain Police Department for their excellent communication and focus on the safety of our kids, families and staff as they conducted their raid, which concluded by 7:40 a.m. without further incident, the release said.
