Roundup: Shawnee edges Delphos Jefferson to stay unbeaten in girls basketball

DELPHOS — Shawnee sophomore Grace Freiberger saved her best for the final moments.

Freiberger first hit a 3-pointer to start the final quarter.

Then, to finish it off, Freiberger hit a turnaround 7-footer with 10 seconds left to give Shawnee a 28-27 victory over Delphos Jefferson in a non-league girls basketball game Tuesday at Delphos Jefferson.

Freiberger was under the weather, but played nearly the entire game.

“I’m pushing through it,” Freiberger said. “I was very tired, but I had to push through for my team.’’

In the battle of unbeatens, Shawnee is 14-0. Delphos Jefferson is 13-1.

“Every possession counted,” Shawnee coach Rachel Rumbaugh said. “We focused on shutting down the Lindemans (sisters) and we did a good job in the first half. They got loose a couple times in the second half, but it was a big defensive game.’’

Zoe Best led the Indians with 15 points. Freiberger scored seven.

Shawnee’s Kelly Cooper had 10 rebounds with her two points. Hailee Conrad had five blocks and four points.

Ania Pearson had five rebounds, including a couple big offensive boards in the final two minutes.

Lvy Lindeman paced Jefferson with 13 points. Her sister, Alycia Lindeman, scored six.

Lauren French had four points and seven rebounds.

Lyv Lindeman scored on a driving layup to give Jefferson a 27-26 lead with 19 seconds to go.

Best pushed the ball up the floor for Shawnee and dumped the ball to Freiberger on the right block.

Freiberger then spun and canned a 7-foot turnaround to give Shawnee the lead 28-27 with 10 seconds left.

“Zoe came down on the fastbreak and dished it to me,” Freiberger said. “I was ready to put it up.’’

In the final two seconds, Lindeman drove the right side of the lane, but her shot was partially blocked by Pearson just before the final horn.

“I’ll take Lyv every day of the week getting my last-second shot,” Jefferson coach Denise Lindeman said. “I give my girls a lot of credit. They gave me everything they had. We just came up one point short.’’

Shawnee led 23-22 after three quarters. Best scored six points in the third to keep Shawnee in front.

Freiberger’s 3-pointer pushed the Indians’ lead to 26-23 with 5:50 to go.

“That was a big shot,” Rumbaugh said.

Both teams played sticky defense, mostly man, the entire game.

“There was great pressure,” Lindeman said. “They played great defense on us and the shots didn’t fall for us tonight. Give them credit. They’re a good team.’’

Both defenses reflected the low-shooting numbers.

“I think our defense was a big part of our game tonight,” Freiberger said. “They were tough and they were all over me.’’

Shawnee’s Best played most of the second half with three fouls. So Best was relieved of defensive duty on Lyv Lindeman by Zoe Smith and Tessa Stahler.

Shawnee led 7-4 after the first quarter and 15-11 at the half.

Jefferson shot 26 percent from the field and was 0 of 8 on 3-pointers. The Wildcats hit only 3 of 21 in the first half.

Shawnee shot 33 percent from the field and was 1 of 3 on 3-pointers.

Shawnee had 21 turnovers. Jefferson had 12 turnovers.

Shawnee won the boards, 31-22.

“It was a fun game and the crowd was into it,” Rumbaugh said. “And Delphos Jefferson is a very quality basketball team so it was a good win for us.’’
