Gardner-Webb Splits Pair To Close Out GWU Duals Sunday Afternoon


BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb split its Sunday dual matches in Paul Porter Arena against a pair of MAC foes, topping George Mason and falling in the final to Ohio.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs defeated George Mason by a 22-14 score, getting wins at six different weight classes. 

Todd Carter sparked an early 9-0 rally at 133 pounds, pinning Michael Rapuano in 4:50 to build in Aedyn Concepcion’s 3-2 opening win at 125 pounds.

The Patriots rallied with three consecutive wins, including a tech fall at 149 from Alex Madrigal, but RJ Mosley came away with a clutch 2-0 decision at 165 pounds to steady the ship for Gardner-Webb. George Mason captured a 9-5 win at 174 pounds, but Jha’Quan Anderson raced to an easy 17-3 major decision at 184 pounds and Anthony Perrine gave the ‘Dogs a comfortable lead with a 7-3 win over Kyle Davis at 197 pounds.

Heavyweight freshman Peyton McComas was sharp early with a pair of four-point near falls and held on for a 13-10 decision to close out the match.

In the nightcap, Ohio and Gardner-Webb split the first two bouts, with Carter coming through with a 7-5 win at 133 pounds to event the team score. A quick run by the Bobcats, which including a 16-second pin at 149 pounds by Alec Hagan, pushed the visitors up 15-3 at the midway point.

Mosley followed with another win, but the Bobcats sealed the team victory with a pin by Sal Perrine – the younger brother of Gardner-Webb’s Anthony Perrine – at 174 pounds and a 3-1 decision at 184 pounds,

Anthony Perrine won his second bout of the day with a crafty, 4-3 decision at 197 pounds, but Ohio closed out its win with a 4-2 by Jordan Earnest at 285 pounds.

Ohio also defeated George Mason in the first match of the day, rolling to a 27-9 victory.

Gardner-Webb will take a two-week break before getting back to action at the 2022 Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear on January 1 and January 2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
