VIENNA — Gloria Jean Furrie, 89, went on to glory, surrounded by her children on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021.

Gloria was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Warren. She was the daughter of Pompey G. Felice Sr. and Lucy Felice.

She met John Duke Furrie Jr., the son of John P. Sr. and Dora Furrie, and they were married on Oct. 28, 1950. They were married 65 years when Duke passed away on Feb. 4, 2016. They had four children, John P. Furrie III (Linda) of Naples, Fla., Lu Ann Bowser of Trussville, Ala., Mark Furrie Sr. (Theresa) of Howland and Jeffrey A. Furrie (Patricia) of Howland. Gloria leaves 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren to cherish her memory. She is also survived by her brother, Jay Felice.

Gloria worked for Youngstown Cartage before she and Duke founded Duke’s Sanitary Service in 1982.

Before her entrance into heaven, Gloria lived a long and richly blessed life as a resident of Vienna. She was active in the community as a Girl Scout leader, PTA member, founding member of the Mathews Football Booster Club and a member of the Ladies Guild at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Upon retirement, she and Duke split their time between West Palm Beach, Fla., and Vienna. Gloria loved to read, play cards and travel. She was an active member of the Bugnarese Club, a group of women who had ancestry or had lived in the small village of Bugnara, where her father was born, in the region of Abruzzo, Italy.

Many friendships were developed within this club. She especially enjoyed her dear and special friend, Betty Salomone, as well as her beloved Aunt Ann Detoro, who preceded her in death.

She was the matriarch of the family and kept everyone together through any number of family events.

Gloria was deeply loved by many and will be sorely missed by all friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Duke; son-in-law, Douglas A. Bowser Sr.; as well as many other family members.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, with the Rev. Scott Kopp officiating. There will be no calling hours, per Gloria’s request.
