Bats Stay Hot as Baseball Sweeps Marathon Doubleheader at Ohio Valley


PARKERSBURG, W. Va. – The Ohio Dominican baseball team continued its offensive surge Saturday, April 17, taking both halves of an eight-plus hour doubleheader at Ohio Valley, 25-11 and 5-4 in 11 innings.

With the Saturday sweep, ODU wins three of four games against the Fighting Scots, improving to 18-8 overall and 10-8 in Great Midwest competition.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Ohio Dominican’s 25 scoring output in the opener marked the fifth time in the program’s Division II era that the team scored 20-plus runs.
  • ODU’s 25 runs are the third most in the stretch, with Saturday marking the first time since a 24-11 win over Lake Erie on April 15, 2019, the team registered at least 20 runs in a single contest.
  • The Panthers’ now have the second highest single game output in the G-MAC this spring, trailing only Lake Erie’s 27-9 win over Findlay.
  • ODU relied on the long ball over the weekend, combining for seven home runs over the four-game set.
  • The Black & Gold totaled 49 runs over the four-game series, including 30 on Saturday.
  • ODU’s potent offense was led by junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio), who collected three of his team-high five hits in Game Two.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • Fresh off 19 runs scored in Friday’s doubleheader, Ohio Dominican kept the bats alive with 14 runs in the first inning on Saturday.
  • The first eight batters of the game reached safely for ODU, with a two-run home run from sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) highlighting the rally.
  • Junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) and graduate senior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) also drove in runs during the first frame with doubles.
  • The Panthers had four runs score in the opening inning on bases loaded walks and a hit by pitch.
  • Ohio Valley closed its deficit to seven runs, 17-11, through six complete.
  • Graduate senior Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) launched a one-out homer in the seventh inning, which started an eight-run rally for the Black & Gold, leading to the 25-11 final decision.
  • The Panthers had seven different batters record multiple hits, as well as seven players with multiple RBI.
  • Brill and classmate Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) drove in four runs each to lead ODU, while Wilson and freshman Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) scored a team-high four runs each.
  • Sophomore Marshall Flynn (Heath, Ohio) tossed 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one run to earn his first career collegiate victory.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • The series finale had Ohio Dominican with just one hit through four innings of play.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Panthers broke through, as sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) launched a three-run home run to give ODU a 3-2 lead.
  • Freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) extended the ODU advantage with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the sixth.
  • Junior Brendan Hofacre (Chardon, Ohio) struck out eight batters over 7.0 innings. Hofacre worked around six hits, allowing just the two runs in the first inning.
  • Down to their final three outs, the Scots loaded the bases with no outs and scored twice to tie the game at 4-all.
  • Redshirt freshman Tyler Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) entered in relief and worked out of the bases loaded jam, getting two strikeouts and a ground out to send the game to extra innings.
  •  After a scoreless 10th inning, Hunt led off the 11th with a walk. Komminsk then drove in the sophomore with a base hit to put the Panthers back in front, 5-4.
  • Brill came on to close out the game for ODU, pitching two scoreless frames for his second win of the season.
  • With the game-tying run standing on third base and one out in the 11th, Brill threw out the runner at home plate off a fielder’s choice to preserve the lead.
  • The Scots were able to regroup and had the bases loaded with two outs, but Brill struck out the final batter to earn the doubleheader sweep.
  • Staab went 3-for-6 at the plate and Marshall added two hits as the pair combined for five of ODU’s nine hits in the game.
  • Over 11 innings, the pitching trio of Hofacre, Sullivan and Brill combined for 15 strikeouts.

  • Ohio Dominican returns to Panther Valley for the remainder of its 2021 regular season schedule.
  • The stretch starts with a four-game series against Walsh, beginning with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 23.
