Transformer fire in Co-op City causes widespread power outage
An
underground transformer fire in Co-op City has knocked out power to thousands
of residents there.
Police
sources say the incident began in the basement of building 8 around 10 a.m. FDNY
crews responded to put the fire out. News 12 is told there are no
injuries.
The
power outage has affected Section 1 in Co-op City, which is buildings 1-8.
Census data shows that 9,000 residents live in those buildings, and have an
average age of 55.
Residents
told News 12 that they were told the power could be fixed by the early
afternoon, but police sources have not confirmed that.
News 12 has been trying to get in touch with Co-op City management but has been unsuccessful so far.
