Up to 27 trees down around Huntington; numerous power outages reported
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Several trees and limbs have fallen Tuesday evening in Huntington, especially in the area of 3rd Avenue.
The city of Huntington says Cabell County 911 received reports of up to 27 trees down throughout Huntington. A city spokesman said the Huntington Fire Department responded to 63 calls in a three-hour period
NewsChannel 3′s Andrew Colegrove reports a several-block stretch near the 2700 block is littered after the storm that moved through.
He also reports a church awning was also blown off as a result of the high winds.
A large tree limb was brought down just outside the Cabell County Board of Education Tuesday evening.
The limb blocked one lane of 5th Avenue and damaged a traffic signal.
Another tree fell on a home along Oney Avenue.
A tree hit the roof of Cassidy Bailey’s house and her neighbor’s home along Davis Street in Huntington, damaging Bailey’s back porch.
“When it started thundering, I figured it’d be just a regular rainstorm,” Bailey said. “I looked out the window and saw the rain swirling up like a little tornado tearing the trees down. I was just watching everything fly from trash cans to toys. It destroyed my mom’s back porch, hit this poor lady’s house and scared her about half to death.”
According to the AEP power outage map Tuesday night, there are about 13,000 customers without power in Huntington and surrounding areas of Cabell County.
