Students enjoy Family Literacy Night

LIMA — The Lima City Schools hosted a Valentine-themed Family Learning Night for pre-kindergartners through fourth-graders from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 10, in the commons area at Lima Senior High School. The night was designed to promote learning in fun and creative ways. Students from all of the district’s buildings were invited.

The night was organized by the early childhood education students at Lima Senior High School. The students came up with a lot of activities and oversaw each station with parents and children. The Early Childhood Education students work with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and all ages up to fourth grade. The ECE students go into the city elementary schools to work with children. They reached out for help with a family literacy night. These juniors and seniors in high school developed learning stations for the children.

A special Jenga was an option in which when a block was removed, the child had to read the word on the block. Word searches on the wall with big pens captivated some children. Some students took a seat to hear a story read by Lima City Schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman.
