The ‘Scary Movie’ franchise is being revived.
Paramount Pictures announced that a sixth installment in the horror parody franchise is in development at CinemaCon on Thursday (11.04.24).
Neal H. Moritz – known for his work on the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and ‘Fast and Furious’ films – will be producing the new picture but it is not known if cast regulars including Anna Faris and Regina Hall are to return.
The series was developed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans with the latter pair starring in the first two films.
The original ‘Scary Movie’ hit cinemas in 2000 and parodied horror flicks including ‘Scream’ and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. Four sequels would follow that poked fun at the likes of ‘Saw’ and ‘The Ring’.
Interest in the franchise had declined by the time ‘Scary Movie 5’ – which did not feature either Faris or Hall – was released in 2013 and poor box office returns put the films on hiatus.
The Wayans family were not involved from the third movie onwards and Marlon claims that it was “snatched” away from them by The Weinstein Company – led by the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Speaking to Kevin Hart on the Comedy Gold Minds podcast, the 51-year-old actor said: “We didn’t walk away from a franchise. They didn’t want to make our deal, and they snatched it.
“We never walked away from our franchise that we created. It was taken and us being the creatives that we are were like, ‘Alright, bet.’ Now watch what I create.”
Marlon also recalled that the family only became aware that they would no longer be involved after they read a news article at Christmas time.
He said: “The second one they rushed us into, and by the third one, they didn’t want to pay the money, so they snatched it. We found out on Christmas that they hired somebody else to go do it.”

OJ Simpson’s ‘Dream Team’ defence attorney Alan Dershowitz says the acquitted double-murder suspect will “always have a mixed legacy”.
Alan, 85, was one of nine attorneys – along with Robert Blasier, Carl Douglas, Johnnie Cochran, Robert Shapiro, F Lee Bailey, Barry Scheck, Robert Kardashian, Peter Neufeld, Gerald F Uelmen and Shawn Holley – when Simpson, who died aged 76 from cancer on Wednesday (10.04.24) was put on trial for the killing of his ex-wife Nicole Brown, 35, and her friend Ron Goldman, 25, in 1994.
Alan told People: “He will always have a mixed legacy. But, he’ll always be remembered as the defendant in the very important trial of 1995.
“He was very smart. He didn’t always listen to his lawyers’ advice. (I) told (Simpson) once he got acquitted to assume a low profile. (He) did not.
“He did some foolish things writing a book (‘If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer’) or he went on a lot of television shows.
“(He) did not do himself very much good.”
Alan stressed Simpson’s ‘Trial of the Century’ which went on for 11 months from 1994 to 1995 “had a big impact on the American justice system, on media coverage of trials, on corruption”.
He added: “He had a big impact on racial divisions … he left a mark.
Simpson was arrested in 1994 in connection with the death of Ron and Nicole, who was stabbed so fiercely medical examiners said her head was almost decapitated.
The victims were stabbed to death outside Nicole’s Los Angeles home on June 12, 1994, and despite his acquittal in his criminal trial, Simpson was later found liable for the murders in a civil case, and ordered to pay $33.5million in compensation.
It’s been reported Simpson paid $50,000 a day for his huge defence team in the criminal trial, funded by memorabilia he signed while behind bars.

But Blake is now becoming an independent artist and he took to his Instagram page to share the news with his followers and revealed that is feeling “good” but “scared” after choosing to go it alone.
He posted: “After over a decade on a label it feels scary to go independent but here we are. As someone who hates spam, I promise not to send you annoying emails. Just trying to break free of the algorithm gods gatekeeping art. Speak soon…”
He added: “It feels good to be independent because I’ve wanted to take things into my own hands for a long time”
It comes after Blake recently called on record labels to “fund…
