Newark beats Olentangy Liberty to win district title


COLUMBUS — The Newark boys basketball has been down before, so the Wildcats did not panic on Saturday.

Trailing 29-22, the Wildcats answered like champions with a 19-2 run. It earned Newark a championship, beating second-seeded Olentangy Liberty 57-48 in a Division I district final Saturday at Ohio Dominican.

Newark plays Olentangy Orange at 7 p.m. Wednesday back at Ohio Dominican. The Wildcats will play in their first regional tournament since 2019.

Grant Burkholder led Newark with 25 points. Braylon Morris added eight points, including two 3-pointers in the run, and Drew Oberholtzer two key baskets and an assist late.
