Newark graduate Dave Jones enshrined in Dayton Flyers Hall of Fame


Dave Jones nearly took the University of Dayton football team to the mountaintop. He was honored Saturday for his outstanding career.

The Newark graduate was one of four former star Flyers inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame.

Newark graduate Dave Jones was inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame last Saturday.

Jones earned All-American honors as a senior running back in 1987, leading Dayton to the national championship game. Jones ran for 219 of his single-season record 1,803 yards in a 38-36 upset of perennial power Augustana.

Jones also set single-season marks for rushing attempts and points and tied the mark with 26 touchdowns during the historic run, which ended with a 19-3 loss to Wagner in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Jones had a record-tying 14 100-yard games during his career, totaling 2,684 rushing yards.
