Newark Catholic girls swimmers dominate at Coshocton
The Newark Catholic girls swim team won seven events Saturday to earn runner-up honors despite a small roster during the Coshocton Invitational.
Isabella Pribonic in the 200 freestyle (2:15.52) and 100 butterfly (1:08.07) and Ella Schirtzinger 200 individual medley (2:47.33) and 100 breaststroke (1:27.30) each were double individual winners for the Green Wave, who totaled 189 points, trailing just Mount Vernon’s 205.
Gracie Collins added a win in the 100 backstroke (1:15.44), and teammate Hannah Cormican was right behind in second (1:19.56), and Pribonic, Schirtzinger, Collins and Cormican also won the 200 medley (2:16.33) and 200 free (2:01.97) relays. Placing fourth were Collins in the 100 free (1:08.08) and Ellie Knuth in the 400 free (5:55.81).
Newark’s Maryn Hatfield took runner-up in the 100 fly (1:23.98) and third in the 400 free (5:37.07).
The Newark boys also took runner-up in the team standings with Robert Wright taking runner-up in the 400 free (5:49.42). The Wildcats totaled 151 points, trailing just River View’s 205.
Jeremy Schweiger added a third in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.35), and the foursome of Schweiger, Wright, Leyton Ricketts and Mitchell Mazzone took second in the 400 relay (4:46.87) and third in the 200 medley relay (2:21.60). Turin Hatfield placed fourth in the 400 free (6:28.27).
Licking Heights’ Latham Wallis placed third in the 200 IM (2:48.43), and Wallis, Aiden Nicol, Tucker Gage and Caiden Drake placed fourth in the 200 free relay (2:10.28).
GIRLS WRESTLING
Justice wins at Jackson
Addison Justice won all five matches by first-period pin for Licking Valley, claiming the 125-pound championship Sunday during the Brown Brothers Invitational at Jackson. The unseeded Justice pinned Jackson’s Abi Reeves in the final.
Heath’s Megan DeVito (120) finished 4-1 with four pins to place third. Taryn Gamble (125) and Journey Clair (155) each placed fifth for the Bulldogs.
Watkins duo claim crowns
Watkins Memorial’s Meagan Justice and Zahkia DeBose each won championships Saturday for Watkins Memorial during Whetstone’s Lady Brave Invitational.
Justice (105) won all four matches by pin, beating Westerville South’s Selah Gitonga in her most difficult match of the round-robin format. DeBose (135) pinned all five of her opponents, beating Hilliard Bradley’s Hailey Amador in the final.
Licking Heights’ Molly Crabtree (100) finished 3-1 with a pin to take runner-up. Lauren Seeman (125) added a fifth-place finish.
