Carter Mallernee’s 34 points lead Northridge to win at Johnstown
Carter Mallernee hit a trio of first-quarter 3-pointers, shooting him on his way to a 34-point performance Saturday, leading the Northridge boys basketball team to a 62-53 victory at rival Johnstown in a battle between first-place teams in the Licking County League-Cardinal Division.
Justin Townley added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Ian Travis 11 points for the Vikings (7-2, 5-1), who gained control with a 15-6 edge in the third quarter.
Cody Siegfried led the Johnnies (6-5, 4-2) with 21 points and five rebounds. Caleb Schneider added 13 points and Drew Brett 11.
Granville beats Valley
Granville held visiting Licking Valley to six points in the fourth quarter, sealing a 40-31 victory in LCL-Buckeye play.
Alex Engle hit a trio of 3-pointers and totaled 10 points, matching teammate Dante Varrasso for the first-place Blue Aces (6-6, 4-1). Carson Murphy added seven points.
Kam Walker led the Panthers (4-7, 3-3) with nine points. Jacob Wheeler added seven points.
Utica wins on road
An 18-7 outburst in the second quarter fueled Utica in a 55-34 victory at Lakewood in LCL-Cardinal play.
Trenton Collins scored a game-high 21 points for Utica (9-2, 4-1), which remained tied in the loss column with Northridge for first place. The teams meet at Northridge on Thursday.
Logan Gosnell, who hit a pair of 3-pointers, and Brody McDaniel added eight points apiece for Utica. Colton Ferry led the Lancers (1-11, 0-5) with 15 points, and Adam Crawford added 11.
Heath beats NC
Brayden Bayles piled up 16 points and eight steals, sparking Heath in a 49-34 victory at Newark Catholic (2-7, 1-5) in LCL-Cardinal play.
Ben Mason added 14 points and six rebounds and Will Robertson 11 points for the Bulldogs (6-2, 3-2).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Watkins rallies
Cameryn Wheeler stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds and eight steals for the Watkins Memorial in a 40-38 victory against visiting Olentangy Berlin.
Kalleigh Rennie added 14 points for the Warriors (9-4).
WRESTLING
Three reach top
Granville’s Peyton Costa (113) and Keegan Finley (157) and Johnstown’s Derrick Grigsby (190) won championships at Logan Elm.
Costa pinned four of his five opponents, including Miami Trace’s Will Enochs in the final, and Finley pinned his first four opponents before beating Miami Trace’s Ethynn Munro by technical fall in the final.
Grigsby finished 5-0 with two pins, beating West Jefferson’s Ayden Cordle 7-4 in the final.
Granville’s Andy Sanchez, 4-1, (126) and Ian Rutherford, 3-1, (Hwt.) each took runner-up.
Allberry wins for Watkins
Brenden Allberry finished 5-0 at 150 pounds for Watkins Memorial to win the title during Dublin Scioto’s Kevin Cleveland Memorial.
Allberry pinned four opponents before beating Pickerington North’s Colin Touvell 5-1 in the final. Nolan Perry (106) Gavyn Louks (113) and Scott Speakman (138) each went 4-1 to take runner-up honors for the Warriors.
