Browns punter Corey Bojorquez is AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
BEREA — The Browns have cornered the market on AFC Special Teams Players of the Week honors.
On Wednesday afternoon, punter Corey Borjoquez was honored by the league as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Browns’ 24-10 win at the Washington Commanders last Sunday. He became the third Browns player to win that specific honor this season, making them one of two teams — along with the Los Angeles Chargers — to have three AFC Special Teams Players of the Week this season.
Rookie kicker Cade York earned the award in Week 1 after his game-winning 58-yard field goal to beat the Carolina Panthers. Donovan Peoples-Jones won the award after his Week 13 performance against the Houston Texans in which he had a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Bojorquez averaged 46.8 yards with a net of 43 yards on four punts against Washington, with an average hang time of 3.92 seconds. He pinned the Commanders at their own 4 — with the aid of D’Anthony Bell, who downed the ball — on his second punt and at their own 5 on his final one.
His first punt traveled 64 yards to the Washington 5, but Dax Milne returned it to the 20. That was the only return the Commanders were able to get on one of his punts.
Borjorquez, signed in the offseason after being released by the Green Bay Packers, is eighth in the league with an average of 48.5 yards on 57 punts. His net of 41.2 yards ranks 17th in the NFL.
The other AFC weekly award winners were Chargers running back Austin Ekeler (offense) and New England Patriots defensive back Kyle Dugger (defense). The NFC winners were Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans (offense), New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan (defense) and the Green Bay Packers’ Keisean Nixon (special teams).
Jack Conklin, Denzel Ward, D’Ernest Johnson miss practice due to injuries
Three Browns players missed Wednesday’s practice due to injuries. Right tackle Jack Conklin (ankle), cornerback Denzel Ward (shoulder) and running back D’Ernest Johnson (ankle) were all listed on the injury report.
Conklin and Ward sustained their injuries during the win at Washington. Coach Kevin Stefanski was not ready to determine their status for Sunday’s game at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“We will see,” Stefanski said. “Not ruling either one out. We will see how the week goes. Hard to say.”
Four other Browns players did not practice on Wednesday. All four — defensive ends Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney, left guard Joel Bitonio and receiver Amari Cooper — were for their usual Wednesday rest days.
