Newark Catholic girls basketball knocks off state champion Waterford
Kylie Gibson racked up 26 points Friday, powering the Newark Catholic girls basketball team to a 54-48 victory at Waterford, the defending Division IV state champion.
Gibson also recorded four steals for the Green Wave (9-1). Sophie Peloquin added 12 points and nine assists and Fini Kaiser six points and 10 rebounds.
Annarino leads Granville
Harper Annarino piled up 30 points for Granville in a 51-25 victory against visiting Worthington Kilbourne.
Ava Gossman added 12 points for the Blue Aces (9-1), who host Newark Catholic in a showdown of once-beaten teams on Tuesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Utica wins at home
Utica put three players in double figures, cruising to a 57-43 victory against visiting Tree of Life.
Trenton Collins led Utica (6-2) with 21 points. Roman Gamble added 14 points, and Brody McDaniel 13, hitting three of the team’s six 3-pointers.
GCA drops road game
Eli Cooper’s 14 points led Granville Christian in a 62-43 loss at Danville.
Andrew Benvie added 12 points for the Lions (2-5).
WRESTLING
Three Cats claim titles
Jibreel Smith at 126 pounds, Hunter Cayton 132 and Eli Justice 150 won championships, leading Newark to a third-place finish during St. Clairsville’s America’s Best Value Invitational.
Smith won all four of his matches by pin, beating teammate Ray Taylor in the final. Cayton won all four matches by pin, beating St. Clairsville’s Therron Fillon in the final, and Justice won all five matches by pin, beating Martins Ferry’s Shayden Fogle in the final.
Adding to Taylor’s runner-up finish, Kallan Baker (175) took third for the Wildcats.
Granville competes at Brecksville
Peyton Costa (113) and Carson Carr (150) won two matches apiece for Granville during the prestigious Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament.
