Licking Valley scores big road win against Watkins Memorial
Jacob Wheeler, Jacob Curry and Kam Walker each made a 3-pointer during a 17-6, fourth-quarter run Saturday that carried visiting Licking Valley over Watkins Memorial 47-35 in Licking County League-Buckeye Division boys basketball.
Wheeler and Curry scored 10 points apiece and Owen Hottinger added eight for the Panthers (3-3, 3-1).
Chase Massie and Jud Wise hit for nine each for the Warriors (2-3, 1-3).
Utica stops Johnnies
Preston Collins poured in 15 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter Saturday, as host Utica blitzed Johnstown 23-14 for a 65-54 LCL-Cardinal victory.
Zach Heckman added 11 points for the Redskins (3-1, 2-1).
Cody Siegfried popped in 19 and Caleb Schneider had 12 for the Johnnies (4-3, 3-1).
Blue Aces victorious
Jase Becker’s 13 points led a balanced attack Saturday, as host Granville stopped Licking Heights 52-47 in the LCL-Buckeye.
Dylan Niedermeyer and Rex Rader chipped in with 12 points each for the Blue Aces (2-4, 2-1).
Ezra Bobo and Boubacar Conde scored 12 apiece for the Hornets (3-5, 2-2).
NC wins first
Braylon Bates rifled home four 3-pointers Saturday and scored 12 points in Newark Catholic’s 21-3 quarter run, leading the Green Wave past visiting Lakewood 53-39 in the LCL-Cardinal.
Bates totaled 22 points and Eli Morris added 18 for NC (1-3, 1-2).
Adam Crawford cashed in 19 points for the Lancers (1-7, 0-4) and Colton Ferry had nine.
Lions lose in MOCAL
Visiting Tree of Life romped to a 69-37 Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League win against Granville Christian on Saturday.
Eli Cooper tallied 13, while Zack Leija and Andrew Benvie contributed 10 for the Lions (1-4, 1-3).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Granville upset
Bishop Watterson (2-4) sprung a 45-34 upset on undefeated Granville on Saturday at Ohio Dominican.
Harper Annarino scored 13 points and Aliyah Moore added nine on a trio of 3-pointers for the Blue Aces (7-1).
Watkins romps
Kalleigh Rennie’s 15 points Saturday powered Watkins Memorial to an easy 74-14 win against visiting Dayton Dunbar (0-9).
Kiley Jones-Barrera and Taylor Susil added 10 points each for the Warriors (7-2).
Trojans top Valley
Host Centerburg (3-4) downed Licking Valley 44-35 on Saturday.
The Panthers dropped to 2-6.

WRESTLING
Valley 2nd at Sheridan
Mason Hornfeck captured the 120-pound championship Saturday and three other Licking Valley wrestlers took second, as the Panthers finished runnerup out of 11 teams in the Sheridan Larry Remmert Memorial.
Dublin Coffman won with 403.5 points to 207 by Valley and 200 by the host Generals. Watkins Memorial was 10th with 22 and Johnstown 11th with 16.
Aidan McMahan (106), Noah Curry (113) and Luke Conaway (150) placed second for the Panthers, while Bryce Justice (190) and Theo Walsh (215) were third. Dylan Dean (126) and Gunnar Hickman (138) finished fourth, while Devyn Boyd (144) was fifth.
Zander Phillips (157) placed fifth for Watkins Memorial, while Johnstown’s Derrick Grigsby was fifth at 190.
NC wins titles
Newark Catholic’s Brendan Sheehan (165) and heavyweight Griffin Halenar both went 5-0 and captured their weight classes Saturday at the Elgin Invitational.
Nico Richards (144), Theo Talbott (157) and Kelly Wendt (175) all went 4-1 and finished third, as all five Green Wave wrestlers to compete placed.
Smith earns title
Newark’s Jibreel Smith went 4-0 to win the 126-pound championship Saturday at the Olentangy Liberty Classic.
Smith won his semifinal match 9-2 and scored a pin in the title bout for the Wildcats, which placed 13th out of 29 teams with 76 points.
Speakman places
Watkins Memorial’s Scott Speakman finished fourth at 138 pounds Saturday in the 51-team North Canton Holiday Tournament.
SWIMMING
Watkins girls 2nd
Watkins Memorial competed in the 14th Mount Vernon Small School Invitational at Kenyon College on Saturday, with the girls team placing second out of 15 teams and the boys were third.
Sophia Lochard, Olivia Crock, Ava Dutton and Annie Edward placed first in both the medley relay and the 200 free relay for the Warriors. Crock also won the 50 free and 100 free, while Dutton took the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Lochard captured the 500 free for Watkins, which was edged 330-323 for the title by Tri-Valley.
On the boys side, Wes Arnholt, Cody Jordan, Cain May and Caden May won the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. Caden May placed first in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 100 free. Arnholt was second in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, while Jordan was third in the 50 freestyle for the Warriors, which scored 230 points and trailed only Whetstone (288) and the host Yellow Jackets (258) in the team standings.
