Newark Catholic stays step ahead of Watkins Memorial in girls hoops
A trio of Newark Catholic players scored 19 points apiece Tuesday, shooting the Green Wave to a 62-53 victory against Watkins Memorial in Licking County League girls basketball action.
Kylie Gibson hit six 3-pointers in her 19-point performance. Sophie Peloquin and Maddie Kauble also hit that number in the win for NC (4-1, 4-1), and Peloquin added eight assists and Mayci Sayre eight rebounds.
Cameryn Wheeler led the Warriors (5-2, 3-2) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Ella Perry added 12 points and nine rebounds, Shelby Lott 12 points on four 3s and Kalleigh Rennie 10 points.
Sturgell sparks Lakewood
Grace Sturgell hit four of Lakewood’s seven 3-pointers and totaled 18 points in a 45-27 victory against visiting Licking Valley in LCL play.
Addison Pound added eight points, Charlee Palmer seven and Rachel Crist for the Lancers (4-3, 2-3), who used a 16-2 edge in the second quarter to take control.
Rylee Hillis led the Panthers (2-4, 1-3) with seven points, and Avery Williams added six.
Johnstown edges Heights
Alexis Diehl piled up 17 points and nine rebounds, powering Johnstown to a 40-36 victory against visiting Licking Heights in LCL play.
Lauren Baughman added all 12 of her points after halftime and a team-high 11 rebounds for the Johnnies (3-4, 2-3).
Tori Diggs hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Hornets (2-5, 1-3). Amya Thompson added 12.
GCA rallies for road win
A 15-9 edge in the fourth quarter allowed Granville Christian to slip past host Delaware Christian for a 28-25 victory in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Ellie Flowers led a balanced attack for the Lions (4-2, 2-1) with eight points. Natalia Locke and Chloe Hamilton each scored all of five their points during the pivotal fourth quarter.
Newark trips at Marysville
Riley Gingerich hit a trio of 3-pointers, totaling nine points for Newark in a 55-40 loss at Marysville.
Ally Carr added nine points and Syncere Royster and Jenna Shackleford seven apiece for the Wildcats (2-5), who were held to three points in the third quarter to fall behind 34-17.

GCA falls on road
Andrew Benvie’s 18 points led Granville Christian in a 59-49 loss at Delaware Christian in MOCAL play.
Eli Cooper added 16 points, Zac Leija eight and Bentley Johnson seven for the Lions (1-3, 1-2).
WRESTLING
Newark takes third
Four Newark competitors were unbeaten Saturday as the Wildcats finished 3-2 during the Wolfpack Duals at Worthington Kilbourne.
Jibreel Smith (132) and Eli Justice (150) each went 5-0, Kallan Baker (175) 4-0 and James Daugherty (165) 3-0 for the Wildcats, who beat the host Wolves, Westland and Olentangy Orange and lost to Lancaster and Gahanna.
