Granville duo, Watkins Memorial’s Henry earn All-Ohio second team
COLUMBUS — Tyler Ernsberger and Dante Varrasso were honored Wednesday as one of the top pass-catch combinations in the state.
The Granville senior quarterback and his junior receiver each were named to the All-Ohio Division III second team by the Ohio Preps Sportswriters Association after leading the Blue Aces to a share of the Licking County League-Buckeye Division title and a playoff berth.
Ernsberger threw for 2,337 yards and 21 touchdowns. Varrasso was responsible for 906 of those yards and 11 scores on 65 receptions.
Watkins Memorial senior defensive back Jace Henry was named to the Division II second team after leading the Warriors to the other piece of that Buckeye championship and a playoff berth.
Henry made six interceptions and blocked seven kicks while leading the Warriors’ defensive charge, which included holding four opponents to eight points or fewer.
Also in Division III, Granville senior running back Matt Chaykowski was named to the third team and junior kicker Noah Musick to the honorable mention list.
Chaykowski ran for 1,034 yards and six TDs. Musick made 12 field goals and was perfect on 24 extra-point attempts.
Also in Division II, Licking Heights senior quarterback Deuce Caldwell was named to the third team and senior teammate lineman Andrew Schmitz to the honorable mention list as were Watkins senior lineman Colton Middendorf and junior quarterback Patrick Carney.
Caldwell ran for 967 yards and 13 TDs and added 772 yards and five scores through the air. Schmitz was Caldwell’s body guard at left tackle.
Carney racked up 1,515 yards passing and 946 yards rushing, splitting his 28 total scores between the air and ground. Middendorf was a force in the trenches on both sides of the ball during the Warriors’ eight-game winning streak.
