Licking Valley’s Noah Curry wins first wrestling title
Freshman Noah Curry enjoyed quite a debut Saturday for the Licking Valley wrestling team.
Curry finished 4-0 to win the 113-pound title during the Cambridge Invitational. He won his first three matches by pin before beating Minerva’s Lincoln Wallace 10-3.
Devyn Boyd (144) placed third and Bryce Justice (190) and Bo Wolford (Hwt.) each fourth for the Panthers.
Three take runner-up
Newark’s Jibreel Smith and Northridge’s Haedyn Parman and Michael Fister each wrestled to a runner-up finish during the John Brown Memorial at Mount Vernon.
Smith had three pins at 126 pounds before falling in the final to Dublin Coffman’s Joseph Baumann 9-6.
Parman had two pins and a 16-2 win at 120 before falling in the final to Coffman’s Rahul Raghuram 16-7. Fister had three pins at 138 before falling by pin to Coffman’s Omar Ayoub, a reigning Division I state champion, in the final.
Northridge’s Carter Yorde (106) and Newark’s Reece Redman (190) each placed third. Utica’s Anthony Unger (106) and Zachary Cyphers (165) and Newark’s Kallan Baker (175) each placed fourth.
Jacks goes unbeaten
Keegan Jacks won all five of his matches by pin at heavyweight to lead Lakewood during the Shamrock Duals at Barnesville.
Caleb Rafferty (120/126) won all four of his contested matches, and Tyler Christman (157) won three contested matches for the Lancers, who wrestled Cincinnati Princeton, Bidwell River Valley, Jonathan Alder, Union Local and Hurricane (West Virginia).
Speakman leads Watkins
Scott Speakman won all four of his contested matches at 144 pounds for Watkins Memorial during the Bob Williams Duals at Marysville.
Nolan Perry (106), Gavyn Louks (120), Jayden VanBalen (132), Brenden Allberry (150) and Devin Nicodemus (157) each won three contested matches for the Warriors, who wrestled against Springboro, Teays Valley, Delaware, Delta and Mechanicsburg.
BOWLING
Gabor wears crown
Jade Gabor rolled consistent games of 206, 204 and 238, totaling a 648 series for Newark to win the Teays Valley Turkey Shootout.
Makayla Adams followed in 13th with a 524 series, and Andy Hupp added a 488 series and Taylor Enright 456 for the Wildcats, who finished fourth as a team.

In Friday’s B-flight, Licking Valley’s Tyler Mohler placed third in the boys 100 free (53.57) and fifth in the 50 free (24.33).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Johnstown falls at home
Johnstown fell into an early 14-6 hole after one quarter against visiting DeSales (2-0) and could not make up the ground in a 54-44 loss.
Caleb Schneider buried five 3-pointers and piled up 23 points to lead the Johnnies (1-2). Cody Siegfried added five points in his season debut and Drew Brett four assists.
Granville makes charge
Granville nearly rallied from a 22-4 deficit after the first quarter, falling 57-51 to visiting Tri-Valley (1-1) at Denison.
Dante Varrasso led the Blue Aces (0-3) with 15 points. Dylan Niedermeyer added 14 points, all after halftime, and Rex Rader nine on a trio of 3-pointers.
Valley loses to West M
Visiting West Muskingum (3-0) broke open a close game late in the third quarter as Licking Valley fell 64-48.
Jacob Wheeler led the Panthers (0-2) with 12 points. Gunner Bowman added eight points and Chase Vermilion seven.
