Xavier, Georgetown Set for Nationally Broadcast Game on FS1


CINCINNATI – Xavier women’s basketball travels to Georgetown for its first BIG EAST road game of the season on Sunday, Dec. 4. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET from McDonough Arena with the game being aired nationally on FS1.

• Georgetown was picked to finish tied for ninth in the Preseason BIG EAST Coaches’ Poll after posting a 10-19 (4-15 BIG EAST) record last season. The Hoyas return two starters from last season, including No. 2 scorer Kelsey Ransom (12.0 ppg). The Hoyas have seven newcomers on the 2022-23 roster.
• Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in blocks (5.1), while ranking fourth in steals (9.0), scoring defense (58.0) and field-goal percentage defense (.360). The Hoyas also rank 11th in scoring offense (58.1), free-throw percentage (.620) and field-goal percentage (.364).
• Kristina Moore leads the team in scoring (10.4), while Kelsey Ransom ranks second (9.7). Ransom also leads the team in rebounding (6.7), steals (2.1) and assists (3.4).
 

• Xavier trails the all-time series with Georgetown, 11-9. The Musketeers are 3-2 in the last five meetings vs the Hoyas.

• Xavier has won two straight games at Georgetown and is 3-6 in road games in the series history. The Musketeers won the last meeting at McDonough Arena, 70-67, in overtime on Jan. 28, 2022.

• Xavier is coming off a 74-55 BIG EAST loss to Seton Hall on Friday, Dec. 2. The Musketeers have now dropped seven straight vs the Pirates.

• Xavier matched its season high in three pointers made with 10. The Musketeers also made 10 three pointers vs Saint Francis (PA) on Nov. 13. Prior to the Saint Francis (PA) game, the Musketeers had not made 10 or more three pointers in a game since Jan. 10, 2020 (13 three pointers at Georgetown).

• Kaysia Woods led Xavier with 13 points behind four 3-pointers. She added four rebounds, one steal and one assist.

• Taylor Smith added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Courtney Prenger chipped in 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go along with three rebounds.

• Mackayla Scarlett was held under 10 points for the first time this season as the junior guard finished with eight points. She added six assists and five rebounds.

• Shelby Calhoun paced the Musketeers on the glass with six rebounds. Seton Hall won the battle on the glass, 41-33.

• Xavier was held to its second-lowest field-goal percentage of the season (.357). Xavier finished the game 10-for-23 from behind the arc and 5-for-12 from the the foul line. The Musketeers committed 21 turnovers, the team’s third game of the season with 20 or more turnovers.

• Xavier held a 15-14 advantage in points off of turnovers. Seton Hall scored eight more second-chance points (13-5) and held a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint. The Pirates also scored 11 more fastbreak points (14-3).
 

Fernanda Ovalle was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Nov. 28. She earns the honors for the second time in as many weeks.

• The guard led the team in scoring (16.7), rebounding (7.0) and field-goal percentage (.529) last week. She added four assists and three steals.

• Junior guard Mackayla Scarlett ranks 14th in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game. She averaged 0.6 points per game as a freshman and 8.1 points per game as a sophomore.

Mackayla Scarlett ranks tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in three pointers made (17), while ranking 13th in the three-point field-goal percentage (.405). Taylor Smith also ranks ninth in three-point field-goal percentage (.448).

• Two other Musketeers are averaging 11 or more points per game in newcomers Taylor Smith (12.9) and Fernanda Ovalle (11.8). Ovalle also leads the team in rebounding (5.8), while ranking second in field-goal percentage (.507).

Courtney Prenger is averaging 8.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The senior forward averaged 2.2 points and 3.0 rebounds last season. She also has 12 blocks this season to lead the Musketeers, while ranking third in the BIG EAST.

• Xavier ranks third in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage (.385). The Musketeers only hit 26 percent of their three pointers last season (ranking 11th in the BIG EAST). Xavier also ranks second in three-point field-goal percentage defense (.241).

• Xavier also ranks second the BIG EAST in blocks, averaging 4.6 blocks per game. The Musketeers also rank third in the BIG EAST in steals (9.4), paced by Mackayla Scarlett who has 15 steals.

• Xavier ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in scoring offense, averaging 70.5 points per game. The Musketeers ranked eighth in the conference in scoring offense last season (62.3). Xavier also ranks third in the BIG EAST in assists (17.3), while ranking 33rd in the NCAA.

• Xavier ranks 22nd in the NCAA in three-point field-goal percentage (.385) and 50th in blocks per game (4.6). Individually, Courtney Prenger ranks 45th in the NCAA in total blocks.

• Fernanda Ovalle (20 points) and Mackayla Scarlett (21 points) both set career highs in scoring at SIUE on Nov. 27. It marked the first time since Jan. 10, 2020 that Xavier had two players score 20 or more points in a game (A’riana Gray and Aaliyah Dunham each scored 20 points at Georgetown).

• Xavier dished out 30 assists on 33 made baskets (33-for-70) vs McNeese State, the most by a BIG EAST team this season and tied for the sixth most in a game this season in the NCAA. The 30 assists rank tied for second in single-game school history. The last time Xavier had 30 assists in a game was on Dec. 8, 1999 vs Charlotte. 

• Xavier opened its season with an 87-68 win at Miami (Ohio). The 87 points are the most in a game for Xavier since Dec. 18, 2018 vs Alabama State (W, 87-58).
 

• Aanaya Harris returns for her sophomore season after posting 9.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She added 52 assists, 23 steals and eight blocks. 

• Aanaya Harris added a .463 field-goal percentage, ranking second among BIG EAST freshmen and 14th overall. Her 9.2 points per game also ranked third among conference freshmen.

• Senior Shaila Beeler led the team in assists (117) and steals (34) last season, while adding 8.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. The guard ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage (.805) and fifth in assists (4.0).

• Xavier also welcomes five newcomers: Taylor Smith (missed 2021-22 season with an injury), Nila Blackford (transfer from Kent State), Fernanda OvalleBella Ward and June Ruiz Azkue.
 

• The Musketeers will play five of their first six BIG EAST games at Cintas Center. Xavier opens its conference schedule on Black Friday vs Creighton who advanced to the 2022 NCAA Elite Eight.

• Xavier will play four games on national television: at Georgetown on Dec. 4 (FS1), vs Villanova on Jan. 1 (CBS Sports Network), vs UConn on Jan. 5 (SNY) and at UConn on Feb. 27 (CBS Sports Network).

• The BIG EAST Tournament will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., for the third straight season. The tournament will be held on March 3-6.

• Xavier will play nine non-conference games (two on the road, seven at home). The Musketeers will play teams from seven different conferences (MAC, Horizon, NEC, Sun Belt, Southland,…
