Ethan Ryan fuels Watkins Memorial boys basketball in opening win



Ethan Ryan poured in 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter Wednesday, shooting the Watkins Memorial boys basketball team to a 55-48 season-opening victory against visiting Briggs.

Ryan buried five 3s. Chase Massie added nine points and Cole Massie, Jude Wise and Jagan Bennett six points each.

Johnstown edged at buzzer

A game-winning jumper for Mount Vernon sent Johnstown to a 55-53 defeat at home.

Brady Barb hit four 3-pointers, leading the Johnnies (1-1) with 14 points and five assists. Caleb Schneider matched him with 14 points, hitting a trio of 3s, and Clayton Gearhart added 10 points and Kyle Siegfried nine.

Hudson Rohler piled up 26 points for the Yellow Jackets.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Heights falls at home

Licking Heights (1-2) fell into a 19-4 hole after the first quarter and eventually lost 62-30 to visiting Worthington Christian.
