ASU football upset by Eastern Michigan in college football game
The Arizona State football team lost to Eastern Michigan on Saturday in a Week 3 college football game at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

Arizona State football upset by Eastern Michigan in college football game in Tempe
The ASU football team lost to Eastern Michigan on Saturday in Tempe, 30-21.
Arizona State was unable to stop Eastern Michigan’s running game, led by RB Samson Evans, who rushed for 259 yards and a touchdown in the game on 36 attempts.
EMU gained 316 yards rushing in the game, averaging 6.4 yards per carry,
Eastern Michigan was a 19.5-point underdog in the game.
With the victory, the Eagles became the first MAC program to beat a Pac-12 team in the regular season.
Eastern Michigan lost Taylor Powell, its staring quarterback, in the first half, but relied on its running game to beat ASU without him.
Emory Jones went 20-for-32 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown for ASU in the loss.
Xazavian Valladay rushed for a 127 yards on 16 attempts for ASU, also scoring a touchdown.
The ASU defense couldn’t keep Eastern Michigan off the field, as the Eagles didn’t have to punt until the fourth quarter and only punted once in the game.
ASU fell to 1-2 with the loss after losing to Oklahoma State last week.
The Sun Devils open Pac-12 play next week against Utah.

What little hope ASU football had vs. Eastern Michigan disappeared when Jaylin Conyers fumbled the ball on Arizona State’s next possession, giving Eastern Michigan the ball.
The Eagles are trying to become the first MAC team to beat a Pac-12 team in the regular season.

ASU can’t stop the run again as EMU extends lead
The Sun Devils once again couldn’t stop the run on EMU’s next possession, something they have struggled with all game, as Samson Evans and the Eagles ran past Arizona State to extend their lead to 30-21 on a 19-yard field goal by Jesus Gomez.
On 3rd and 1 on the drive, Samsom Evans rushed for 35 yards to the ASU 35 in a key play that allowed the Eagles to continue the drive and end up taking a lot more time off the clock.
ASU did hold the Eagles to the field goal, but that field goal put EMU one step closer to the upset over Arizona State.
Evans has 34 carries in the game for 236 yards and a touchdown.
It’s going to take something very special for ASU to somehow rally in this game.

ASU makes it a one-score game with long run vs. Eastern Michigan
This game isn’t over yet.
Xazavian Valladay had a 44-yard touchdown run to pull the Sun Devils within 27-21 with 10:48 left in the game.
ASU’s drive went for 80 yards on five plays and took just 1:34 off the clock.
The question now is … can ASU’s defense make another stop on Eastern Michigan?
EMU has 220 yards rushing and one would expect them to try to march down the field rushing to milk some time off the clock.

ASU forces Eastern Michigan to punt for first time in game … in fourth quarter
The Sun Devils finally forced EMU to punt, and it came at a critical point in the game, allowing ASU to get the ball back with 12:28 left in the game, trailing 27-14.
ASU’s defense forced a fumble on Eastern Michigan’s possession, but EMU recovered.
Still, a stop is a stop for ASU, especially the way this game has gone.

The Sun Devils were forced to punt on their next possession of the game after a 5-play, 13-yard drive.

Eastern Michigan’s Jesus Gomez hit a 39-yard field goal with 7:04 left in the third quarter to extend the Eagles’ lead to 27-14.
Samson Evans ran for 28 yards on his team’s first play of the possession, getting EMU into field goal range.
ASU hasn’t been able to stop EMU on the ground. Eastern Michigan has 193 yards rushing in the game on 31 attempts, averaging 6.2 yards per rush.
Evans has 21 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown.
