Democrats Became More Pro-Choice? So Have Catholics

Jayd Henricks’s “How the Pro-Life Democrat Went Extinct” (op-ed, June 3) indicts the silence of Catholic bishops as Democrats became pro-abortion. But the scandal is much larger.

Today a majority of U.S. Catholics seem to support legal abortion. Perhaps they are from the majority who no longer attend Mass regularly and are fully assimilated Americans, with a cultural attachment to the faith. At the least, though, this might suggest that witness to the cross must always be the principal pastoral work of the leaders of the faith.
