MAGA Republicans Pounce After Nancy Pelosi’s Husband Arrested for DUI

Pro-Trump Republicans took aim at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, after news broke Sunday that her husband, Paul Pelosi, was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol in Napa County, California.

TMZ first reported on Sunday afternoon that Paul Pelosi was arrested late Saturday night. Fox News later confirmed the report, citing Napa County records.

The news network reported that the arrest took place at 11:44 p.m. and Paul Pelosi was later booked in jail at 4:13 a.m. before being released at 7:26 a.m. Bail for the top House Democrat’s husband was set at $5,000.

A spokesperson for Pelosi told Fox News: “The Speaker will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast.”

Quickly, a number of right-wing commentators and politicians responded to the news by attacking Pelosi, while also criticizing her and her husband.

“This Memorial Day weekend, remember not to drink and drive. Save a life, call an Uber @SpeakerPelosi,” Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, tweeted Sunday afternoon.

“How much time in jail will Paul Pelosi spend? He endangered so many lives by his reckless behavior,” author and commentator Brigitte Gabriel wrote in a Twitter post. “If his last name was Trump the media would make this the number 1 story.”

Nick Adams, a pro-Trump author, wrote in a tweet that, “Paul Pelosi is a thug.” In another post, he said, “The Pelosi Crime Family should be investigated by the Trump Administration.”

Right-wing podcast host and commentator Mark Levin appeared to blame Paul Pelosi’s alleged DUI on his wife. “Can’t really blame him,” he quipped in a tweet.

“We don’t know if Nancy was in the car, but from what I’ve heard about her I’m guessing SHE was the drunk one driving and he just took the fall,” California GOP Senate candidate James P. Bradley tweeted. Notably, the House Speaker’s spokesperson said she was not in California at the time of the arrest.

“Paul Pelosi didn’t drink a thing he just gave his wife a hug and caught a contact DUI,” Errol Webber, a GOP candidate running for Congress in California’s 47th District, tweeted.

“Paul Pelosi was just arrested for a DUI. Frankly, if you were Nancy Pelosi’s husband you’d be drunk all day, too,” Danny Tarkanian, a congressional candidate in Nevada, tweeted.

According to DrivingLaws.org, a first offense for driving under the influence results in fines of $390 to $1,000, with additional so-called “penalty assessments.” The final fine can end up being several thousand dollars. An individual’s license is generally suspended for six-months after a first DUI arrest. Those found guilty also routinely face probation for up to three years, although the amount could be raised to five years.

The 82-year-old and has been married to the House Speaker since 1963. He owns Financial Leasing Services, a northern California-based real estate and venture capital investment and consulting firm.
