With the stage set in Pennsylvania’s governor race, abortion rights are becoming a central issue.

The governor can veto or sign abortion legislation if it reaches his desk, and Democrat Josh Shapiro and Republican Doug Mastriano are on opposite sides.

“Pennsylvania can’t go back,” Cumberland County Commissioner Jean Foschi said.

She was among the Pennsylvania Democrats who gathered outside the State Capitol in Harrisburg on Friday to outline the stakes for abortion rights in the November election, especially if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe v. Wade decision.

Liz Reilly said Shapiro would be a fail-safe against a Republican-controlled legislature passing abortion restrictions.

“We need a governor that will stand firm and not allow those bills coming through to make it through,” she said.

As a state senator, Mastriano has proposed legislation restricting abortion. During his primary victory speech, he said he’d oppose Democrats’ attempts to expand access to abortion, potentially up until birth.

“That’s denying the science. That’s immoral,” he said.

Gov. Tom Wolf has vetoed bills restricting abortion in Pennsylvania. Shapiro said he would take a similar stance against what he has dubbed extremist legislation.
