Cincinnati Enquirer names high school athletes of week for April 22

In a vote that ended April 22, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week, presented by Mercy Health, from high school sports action through April 17.

The winter 2022 certificates have been mailed and should have arrived at athletic departments.

Once they reach the schools, please remember to send a picture of winning athletes with their certificates for the photo gallery to [email protected].

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs each week during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Send your nominations by Monday morning for this week’s high school sports action.

The winners are:

Ohio boys spring team of the week: Blanchester baseball – Blanchester is 7-2 with six-straight wins after beating Whiteoak 13-7, Williamsburg 22-2 and Clinton-Massie 7-6.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys spring team of the week: Lloyd Memorial baseball – The Juggernauts are 7-2 since starting the season 0-3, including beating Trimble County 14-13, Holmes 12-2 and Gallatin County 5-4 over the week.

Ohio girls spring team of the week: Oak Hills softball – The girls improved their record to 5-1 and are leading the GMC after a conference win over Lakota West 1-0 – the Highlanders’ first win against Lakota West since 2017. Avery Gottleib’s 2-hit shutout pitching performance, Lilyanna Hayes’ game-saving catch, and Maeve Fink’s 2 hits and game-winning RBI put the Highlanders on top.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls spring team of the week: Villa Madonna softball – Ran through the Ninth Region All “A” Classic, beating Newport Central Catholic 8-6, Holy Cross 13-2 and Beechwood 15-8 in the tournament.

Ohio big school baseball player – Adrian Smith, Lakota West – The freshman went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the Firebirds’ 9-3 victory over Elder April 16.

Ohio small school baseball player: Caleb Chorley, Badin – The junior knocked in four runs, going 2-for-4, and scored three times in the Rams’ 15-2 victory over Dayton Carroll April 12.

Northern Kentucky baseball player: Brody Mangold, Conner – He pitched six shutout innings, striking out 10, in an 8-0 win over Boone County to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Boys big-school lacrosse: Zach Mulligan, Loveland – The senior had 2 goals and 2 assists in the 16-4 win over Little Miami April 13, 3 goals in the 8-6 April 11 win over St. Xavier, and 2 goals with 1 assist in the win over Sycamore April 16, 9-4, for the first-place Tigers.

Boys small-school lacrosse: Cooper Mulligan, Fenwick – The sophomore had 3 goals, 2 assists, 4 ground balls and 1 caused turnover in the 13-6 win over Cincinnati Country Day April 11.

Girls big-school lacrosse: Sydney Minick, Mason – After coming back from a season-ending ACL injury in 2021, the four-year Mason varsity lacrosse player and Division I commit scored 8 goals, 4 assists, 3 ground balls, and 4 draw controls in three games last week against Oak Hills, Fairfield and Olentangy Liberty.

Girls small-school lacrosse: Chloe Torggler, Madeira – The senior had 6 goals, 2 assists, 4 draw controls in the 9-8 overtime win over Bellbrook April 14.

Ohio big school softball player: Jo Sander, Mason – The sophomore went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Mason’s 13-0 win over Middletown April 15.

Ohio small school softball player: Mackenzie Schwartz, Roger Bacon – In the circle, the freshman tossed five shutout innings, yielding just two hits and eight strikeouts in Roger Bacon’s 12-0 win over Clark Montessori April 14. At the plate, she had an RBI double.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana softball player: Laney Hatridge, Beechwood – She went 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and 3 RBI in the April 16 win over Model 18-13. Against Holmes April 15, she went 3-for-4 with 4 runs scored, 6 RBI and a double. In a loss to Villa Madonna, she went 4-for-4 with 4 runs scored, 2 RBI and a triple.

Ohio singles tennis player: Tomasso Strocchi, Oak Hills – He got wins at first singles over Seven Hills B April 11 and a win over his Princeton opponent April 14.

Northern Kentucky singles tennis player: Neel Reddy, Beechwood – He got the first singles win April 12 over Campbell County in the 4-2 team loss.

Boys doubles tennis: Easton Perkins-Devin Boling, Campbell County – The boys won their first doubles match against Highlands April 14 6-0, 6-2 to help the Camels to a 3-2 team win.

Ohio boys big-school track and field athlete: Robert Hart, Oak Hills – He won the high jump and long jump at the Greg Zuleger Harrison Invitational April 15.

Ohio boys small-school track and field athlete: Austyn Shepherd, Batavia – The sophomore won the 110-meter hurdles at the Georgetown High School Invitational April 13.

Northern Kentucky boys track and field athlete: Evan Meek, South Dearborn – He won the discus and the shot put at the Norwood Invitational April 13.

Ohio girls big-school track and field athlete: Jade Avance, Milford – She won the 400-meter dash at the Mt. Healthy Owls Classic April 14.

Ohio girls small-school track and field athlete: Myah Boze, Ross – She won the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles at the Greg Zuleger Harrison Invitational April 15.
