Which 23 countries do the majority of Ohio’s immigrants come from?


CLEVELAND, Ohio – Nearly 14% of the United States is currently composed of recent immigrants. While only 4.6% of Ohio’s population is foreign-born, the state still contributes to the country’s melting pot.

The top countries from which foreign-born residents immigrate to Ohio are India, Mexico, China, the Philippines, and Germany. Together, they make up more than 32% of the foreign-born population in the state, nearly 175,000 people in total.

Stacker compiled a list of the biggest sources of immigrants to Ohio using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Rankings are based on the number of residents from each country living in the state and the percent of the foreign-born resident population they make up.

National numbers are also given for comparison. Of the 23 countries, 16 have a higher percentage of foreign-born residents in Ohio than in the United States. These countries include Canada, Ghana, Somalia, Russia, and Ukraine.

See the list below for which countries immigrants in Ohio came from. All countries in this edited list make up at least 1% of the foreign-born resident population. Countries that contribute the highest percentage of immigrants nationally are also noted.
