Calvin College astronomy professor Dr. Larry Molnar operates the telescope in the dome at Calvin University.

Two Freep Film Festival films have free extras for ticket holders: one includes a free disposable camera and photo processing workshop, the other a presentation by a top astronomist.

Exploding stars

Join Calvin College astronomy professor Dr. Larry Molnar for a talk called “The Backstory of Contact Binary Stars” following the screening of the new film “Luminous” which tells the story of Molnar, the first astronomer in history to publicly predict the near-future explosion of a star. In the talk which is available to “Luminous” ticket holders and patrons of the Michigan Science Center, Dr. Molnar will discuss how contact binary stars end their long lives by merging in an explosive event known as a red nova. What are the steps that take these special binary stars (orbiting so closely they are touching) from a long, tranquil relationship to the inevitability of a violent end? This presentation will reveal the backstory he and his team have recently uncovered.
